What about Midland? They are literally a fake band, though perhaps their “music” is not bro-country. They just embody fakeness though.

I fully accept that all of the above is correct and they are a fabricated group, but I’ll be damned. They got 4 or 5 pretty catchy tunes.

And I think they were created to attempt to fill the neotraditional group hole in country radio.

It’s some dudes that were formed by a label. They have a rich California producer of rap as one member and a literal underwear model as their lead singer. None are from Texas, they don’t write their songs and have tried to seize on the country void of late 70-80s country music nowadays. They are a Nashville business model. They are the Eiffel Tower in Vegas...fake.

Kenny Chesney is the one that started that genre, so I would say him.

Brantley Gilbert’s music has absolutely cratered

His newest album is pure trash.

He puts brass knuckles on his mic in concerts and that may be the trashiest thing I’ve seen

Garth- no. There have always been elements of artist pushing the boundaries of country, and yes he pushed rock elements and pop elements in some of his songs. Garth had great country tunes that stand the test of time (this is all nineties I'm speaking about, not the stuff he's putting out today).

Bro country could be attributed to 2000's singers like Toby Keith, Trace Adkins, Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Kenny, Darrius Rucker, Rodney Atkins, Billy Currington, Jake Owen. These guys definitely paved the way for FGL, Luke Bryan, Kane Brown, Lee Brice, Cole Swindell, Sam Hunt, Dustin Lynch, and Thomas Rhett.

So the KING of Bro Country in my opinion has to be Jason Aldean, as his bro-ness stretches across 2 decades, and is mid-40s still singing about acting like a 19 year old.

I haven’t really paid enough attention to country music in recent years to say. Is
Garth Brooks Bro Country or just pop country?

He had a lot of rock music to his songs. He modeled 80s hair metal concerts to his very own stage personality. He is the biggest selling country music entertainer of all time. At heart he is a rock artist that used country music to get an edge. Just like Shania Twain did with her music who is the biggest selling female performer in country music history.

Garth Brooks surged in popularity because he appealed to a lot of non country music fans. His concerts dwarfed any other concerts in country music. No country artist were as big as Garth Brooks was in the 90s.

Before Garth Brooks was tearing up the stage as country's resident rock n roll cowboy, the young singer was taking lessons from Chris LeDoux.

According to American Cowboy, LeDoux was incredibly nervous performing onstage. Determined to give the audience a memorable show, he introduced pyrotechnics and a light show into his performances. At one show, a pre-fame Garth Brooks was in the audience. Brooks was enraptured and borrowed LeDoux's stage-style later on in his own shows.

"I stole my whole act from Chris," Garth said.

Jason Andean is the unquestioned king of Bro Country. But as bad as that is......I’d rather hear bro country on the radio than this new wave of bitch boy country like Dan and shay and Brett Young.

I loved Saving Country Music's take on this. Apparently there was an article in Billboard that referred to this new fad in the industry as "boyfriend country." The guy from SCM wrote in a post "maybe that's why I don't understand it, I don't have a boyfriend".

Garth isn't bro country, IMO. To me, bro country means a male artist more interested in promoting an image than one committed to being a musical artist. What results are a lot of vapid songs about nothing that lack soul. While Garth didn't write many of his big hits, most of his songs at least had some soul to them and came across genuine.

Garth did bridge the country and pop genres, which probably opened the door for bro country.

Good point about Ledoux.

Garth had this dilemma where he didn't know if he wanted to be KISS or George Strait but realized Ledoux (who is country to the T) merged it and played off that.

Which really sucks because he had some great fricking tunes all the way up to my kinda party imo. Which started to fall off precipitously with the made for radio bullshite but still had some jams

Its kind of funny how we shite on these dudes for inauthenticity when you think about it. In any genre. Its the mass publics shite taste in music that drives it all

How many of you are staying "true to your roots" when a producer approaches you after your 2nd album, says you have major brand potential, and tells you to choose between McMansion money and private island money

"Hey I had a top 10 hit back in the late 90s. I may be back to playing VFW's and county fairs now but I never sold out!!"

Chris Stapleton
