I like Jareet's playing, but I have heard numerous instances of him being an absolute a-hole when on and off stage...like when someone coughs in the audience, he stands up and berates them. And the crews that work with him quit frequently.

All I can say is my parents forced me to listed to a ton of Floyd Cramer on 8-track growing up. I finally came to appreciate him.

I went on the RCA Studio tour in Nashville this Summer and found out that his biggest hit Last Date, was kept from being #1 on the billboard charts by Elvis's Are You Lonesome Tonight. Guess who played piano on that cut...Yep...he played piano on the #1 and #2 Billboard chart songs in 1960. That's pretty badass.

For rock/pop/soul/r&b/country (not the world class, concert pianists), I would assume?

Jerry Lee

Little Richard

Fats

Dr. John

Ray Charles

Paul McCartney

Steve Winwood

Elton John

Billy Joel

Stevie Wonder

Rick Wright

Ray Manzerak

Keith Emerson

Rick Wakeman

Billy Preston

Billy Powell

Freddie Mercury

Now - a lot of these guys played a lot of organ, as well. When you look at that list - I mean, Fats, Jerry Lee and Little Richard (as well as Ray Charles) all leap out because all the guys after them were thinking of them when they were playing. But are they better than Dr. John? Elton John? Joel?

At the end of the day, purely on playing ability, I think it's Elton John. But, the distance between the "best" and "worst" on this list isn't very far apart, IMHO.

Glad to see someone else having Jerry Lee Lewis a little higher than Ray Charles.
