I think Louis Armstrong is fairly underappreciated today for his absolute talent on the cornet and trumpet.
In my opinion, music suffers from recency bias as much as any other medium.

I can see that argument because there is a higher degree of appreciation from people, musicians in particular, of older musicians and pioneers in the genres.
My argument is the casual fans in music far outnumber casual fans in anything else and they tend to be centered on right now though their own developmental time period or specific genre often weigh in as well. So older artists are often overlooked or undervalued in these discussions.
So it sounds like I feel both are true,. Is that possible.

When you say "musician" are you speaking of popular artist or folks who are truly great musicians?
Louisiana has produced more great musicians than any state comparable in size. From a musician standpoint, northeast Louisiana has produced several great musicians who had or still have very successful careers in Nashville.
Derek Mixon from West Monroe has a Grammy for his work with Chris Stapelton. Lonny Wilson was one of the most successful studio drummers in Nashville during the 80's and 90's. Michael Rhodes, also from West Monroe has played bass on recordings for Dolly Parton, John Anderson, Restless Heart, Dan Seals, Michael Martin Murphy, Randy Travis, Hank Williams Jr., Alabama, Delbert McClinton, Rodney Crowell, Kenny Rogers, Rosanne Cash, Reba McEntire, Steve Winwood, Glenn Campbell, Vince Gill, Bob Segar, Larry Carlton, Faith Hill, Elton John, Peter Cetera, Mark Knopfler, John Fogerty, LeAnn Rimes, Dixie Chicks, Olivia Newton John, Brian Wilson, Michael Bolton and hundreds of other top artists.
He presently plays bass for Joe Bonamassa. He is without a doubt one of the greatest musicians to ever come from Louisiana.

This is a pet peeve of mine, threads like this should be qualified with something like “best famous musician”, on any given night there are musicians working in the French Quarter that are better musicians than most of those mentioned in this thread.
