This is exactly why the opinion of someone who is a guitarist doesn't answer the question.

Sure, guitarist will appreciate technical chops more than i do because I don't play guitar. And if you are asking the question of who has the best technical guitar chops, then ask that question.

I'm gonna think about who best uses the guitar as a tool for making great sons, because that is the more important question by a cozy margin.

I don't care if Eric Clapton can jerk off with his left hand while playing a mozart symphony on the guitar with his right. Did it result in a great song? And with Clapton, it didn't. So, next.

As is Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Page, Kirk Hammett, Yngvie Malmsteen, Mark Knopfler, Joe Satriani, EVH, Phil Collen (Def Leppard), Dave Mustaine, Kerry King, Tony Iommi, Brian May, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Ry Cooder, Steve Howe, George Lynch, Keith Richards, Ritchie Blackmore, Pete Townshend, Adam Jones, Kim Thayil, John Frusciante, Stephen Stills, etc., literally 1000 rock guys who are clearly better than Keith Urban or Gary Clark, Jr.

LZ, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple all forayed into what became known as "heavy Metal" at about the same time in 1968, but Cream and The Who were already doing that type of music for a couple of years prior.

^ gotta be sarcasm

hendrix stated this. i read a book about hendrix and he's the one that stated the clapton was the godfather of the guitar among professional guitarist. i don't think that he does anything special but, they apparently did. i'm no guitarist but, apparently the real ones respected his ability. that's why i put vito bratta. i just like when guitarist do things that amaze me like vito.

I was fortunate enough to see him on his latest tour with John Knowles and I have no doubt that he's the best out there. The YouTube clips are great but seeing him live gives you an even greater appreciation for his talent.

Definitely in the conversation.

Best Guitarist in the World - #2 Ry Cooder

And never ever do you think of him as any kind of star. Not for him to ever be on a Best Guitarist List. Yet you’ll always find his name there. Whether it’s Guitar Player magazine or Rolling Stone. Or Stuff.co.nz.
