ill say this about gates. he and don donegan from disturbed are two of the more underrated guitarists in music. im not going to pour accolades on them and say that the SONGS are incredibly written, but for the most part... when its their time to shine... they do a much better job than people would assume. ill leave it at that.
if we are just talking about as a guitarist, like not fronting a band, just how good they are at playing a guitar... and roughly in your age group?
Tosin Abbassi is way high up on my list. but most of the bands in that genre are incredibly talented. its the equivolent of having a shred band without a solo guy... these new djent bands are all very musically talented. protest the hero, animals as leaders, periphery, etc...
there are these two guys whose youtube page i started following a year or two ago because they dual cover songs 100% perfectly. they started their own band called abolish the echelon. they are recording songs right now and posting them up as they complete them. very good work. alexstypes is the channel name.

I really shouldn't act like i know that much about who's the very best. Somebody tell me what area of the best list is Peter Frampton on?

Not positive, but probably top 100-150. Very innovative, but not mind-blowing skills.

I am watching one of his shows right now. My friend has hung with him a few times. I applied for a job with that venue today actually.

Best I ever saw live was Gregg Wright.

Its amazing how I feel the exact way about 99% of the guitarists people list as all time bests. There are prolific, innovative, inspirational, and even skilled guitarists, but being just one doesn't make you the best. Someone mentioned Shawn lane, and unless you are a YouTube fanatic or have guitar worlds from the 90s, you just will never know of him. Insanely skilled, talent level that might not be touched by a but a handful, but didn't really write amazing music or care about being known. The exact opposite of clapton. That son of a bitch knows how to make a toe tapper and have 40 year name recognition, yet these two people are in the same running for "greatest guitar guy" spot. Too many factors.

I definitely agree with your point.

I'm just glad Slash hasn't been mentioned. He's really good, but not the greatest anything.

Rankings are also purely subjective and someone is going to rank a guitarist higher or lower based on their preference of music.
We all know a great guitarist when we hear one. They don't always have to produce a melody or tune that you enjoy to recognize their talents and I see a lot of people tend to let that affect their rankings.
