Mark Knopfler is pretty underrated imo.

Clapton is the best guitarist that is alive since my birth.
Derek Trucks has produced the best music since my birth.
Duane Allman was the greatest guitarist who ever lived. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
FYI, I was born in 1979.

very.
my vote for most underrated guitarist are brian may, steve lukather, and alan holdsworth.
holdsworth might be one of the most talented people to EVER pick up a guitar, but he played jazz fusion in the 70s so its a double whammy that no one ever heard how good he was at his prime.
i genuinely fear what could have happened if he and zappa would have joined forces. :insertmindblowngif:
legato, sweep picking, tapping, speed runs and all in the 70s.

I'd go Clapton, if I had to choose just one.
There's tons of to choose from though, most are pretty different though.
Hell, I hadn't seen Malmsteen or Vai mentioned in this thread yet.
Frusciante is my favorite though.

Not that he gets my vote but I'm surprised Kenny Wayne Shepherd has not been mentioned

How would you separate dimeola from mclaughlin, or even delucia? I think al and John are a bit better, but those three are basically held in the same respect. They do what they do perfectly, and they do it so similarly that it hurts them. Same answer I give on here for Friedman and Becker from cacophany

Such a personal taste, opinion answer. Not technically the best but my favorite has to be Gilmour
