Freddie Mercury. Hands down the best.

Yep. Bruce Dickinson for me as well.

I’ve never liked Freddie Mercury or Queen. The only thing I liked about them is Brian May becoming an astrophysicist.

Keeping in mind the topic is front men and not vocalists or singers here are my picks in no particular order other than they are all better than anyone else I can think of.
David Lee Roth-just the other day I read some guys ranking of every Van Halen song ever officially released and he hit on their secret (at least in the DLR era) pretty quickly. They were just so damn fun to listen to. A lot of people (especially music critics) give the impression Roth was just a clown who found the right band at the right time in the right place. Most of these people (especially the music critics) are also the same people who believe that in order for an artist to be considered creative or to have a legitimate message in their art they must be deathly serious all the time. The genius of David Lee Roth is that he could be singing about an airplane crash, a ruptured appendix, typhoid fever, or an asteroid hitting earth and it would still sound fun.
Freddie Mercury-with that stage name what else could he be besides the front man of one of the best rock bands ever? Someday we are going to find out he was the result of an experimental gene splicing procedure involving Errol Flynn and Pavarotti.
Robert Plant-why in the hell do you think Led Zeppelin was referred to as cock rock so often?
Peter Wolf-most underrated front man, the front man Mick Jagger wanted to be. Better free style rapper than 90% of the people who have tried to make a living out of it too even though he didn't know that was what he was doing when he was doing it.
Mick Jagger-just because he wasn't quite Peter Wolf doesn't mean he was bad. I mean Steven Tyler wanted to be Mick Jagger more than he wanted to be Steven Tyler and he never quite got there either.
Roger Daltry-imagine Joe Strummer wanting to be Freddie Mercury
Alice Cooper-front man/front psycho toe-mate-toe/toe-mot-toe
David Bowie-definitely #1 on the list if the topic was front chameleon
I'm having a really hard time coming up with anyone more recent than Diamond Dave. The front men for the bands from the last two or three decades just haven't had the (for lack of a better term) starpower of those listed above. I would easily go into a casino and sit down at a blackjack table if Roth, Mercury, Cooper, Bowie, etc. were the dealer. I'd eat at a restaurant if I knew Roth, Wolf, Plant, Mercury, etc. were going to be my waiter (though I might pass on Alice unless I am in the mood for snake). These guys would garner attention from passersby if they were window cleaners. Would Bono or Dave Matthews stand out if they were doing anything other than singing in a rock band?

Like you, I looked at this as being more about attitude than being a great vocalist.
Roth is probably my #2 behind Jagger.

There was no band more fun to see live than Van Halen in their prime with DLR. You knew you were going to have a good time.

There's a little band called Aerosmith - not many of you probably have heard of it. Anyway, front man's name is Steven Tyler. Pretty good front man, even though it's been a long, long, long time since I've like any of Aerosmith's tunes.

I'm not really some dyed in the wool VH nutswinger, but the category of frontman has to belong to David Lee Roth. I've seen a shitload of live bands and he's really the one that sticks out in my mind.
I was always amazed at how he could seem so up close and charismatic in an arena setting where so many band members virtually disappear in the large space and din of the music. Not only that, he had a true spectacle of a guitar player right there next to him and still managed to steal the show. (Eddie's always hated that and truth be known, that one thing was the real reason for the split in the mid-80s. Band is named after him, he's widely considered the greatest hard rock guitarist ever, yet Roth was always the focal point. And wouldn't let him forget it either.)
You can dislike his singing, his squirrelly personality or even that type of music in general, but that guy really knew how to bring a big venue down as small as a living room. I've never really seen anything like it.

It is all personal taste. Instead of talking about my list being wrong, the point was missed by 90 percent. Who is your list? I was hoping to see some names I had forgotten. Instead, it is people naming one dude and asking how could I forget xyz.
And sorry...Tyler is not on my list...not a fan.
Btw...Anselmo was almost my number one. If you never saw Pantera or Down or Superjoint than I cannot help ya. Ya had to be there.
