Saying they weren’t popular at their height is dumb. They basically hit height and bounced

Even at their height, they were never a “successful mainstream act”.

Because it's a great catalog, any of us would kill to have that great of a career, but it's not unique. There are dozens of guitar players with similar if not more successful careers. When you're going up against the best of the best, every flaw is magnified. It's like an OT Rating. His lack of ability to perform the traditional lead guitar licks holds him back, and his creative use of effects builds him up.

Can you honestly say that Morello has a better catalog than Jimmy Page or any of the following:
Kirk Hammet
Alex Lifeson
Tony Lommi
Steve Oimette
John Bonamassa
Adrian Smith
Jimi Hendrix
Duane Allman
Rick Nielsen
Buddy Guy
Chuck Barry
Eddie Van Halen
Johnny Winters

Me?

I’d think Tom morello might be a cool dad? It was a joke. Not an attack. If you were referring to me?

he's overrated. as time goes by, he should definitely slide down that list. Just going by Rolling Stone's list (which is crap) people listed behind him who are definitely better: Mick Ronson, Mark Knopfler, Ritchie Blackmore, Joe Walsh, Albert Collins, Rory Gallagher, Robert Fripp, Richard Thompson, Jack White, J. Mascis, Dimebag Darrel, Alex Lifeson.

You kidding me? They were an easy HoB and possibly civic type act. They were highly billed in a lot of festivals man. Like 2nd or 3rd from the top on the daily list.

Dude's a fricking noisemaker. 25 to 40 is generous. If he woke up tomorrow with 1/16th the talent of Thayil, he would die from utter shock.

Weakest member of that backline in either band. Only reason he's not the weakest member of RATM is because of Zach.

(Full disclosure, I'm a fan of Audioslave AND RATM.)

I could listen to dogs barking if the rhythm section was Wilk and Commerford. ANY competent guitarist would sound good with that foundation.

That's the secret of RATM and Audioslave, not the noisemaker.

(ETA: To give credit where credit is due, Morello is a good songwriter and comes up with great riffs. So, maybe the better comparison is to someone like Pete Townshend or the Edge, rather than great lead players who are well out of his league, technically.)

Oh yes he is. He might rate pretty high if only dogs and cats are allowed to vote. Most of his solos are past what notes the human ear can detect...... His overuse of the whammy pedal and ultra high notes is nothing but annoying IMHO. I'm glad you enjoy his version of whacka-whacka rap rock. To each his own......

Throw in Nils Lofgren and you have a pretty solid lineup

Last below that kid that always plays the demo guitar at guitar center and U2's the edge

ETA: I saw him with his new band at voodoo fest and it was so cringe inducing. His "solos" are just power chords run through a wah wah pedal and I really had to wonder why those losers are still so mad at president bush
