I think they are one of the premier Alt/new wave bands of the era, along side The Smiths, Simple Minds, etc...no where near Talking Heads however

Depends on if you classify Styx as a 70's or 80's band.

Mothers Talk is about the only song I liked from them.
along The Smiths? not really
Simple Minds? kind of, but I prefer Simple Minds over Tears for Fears.

To even put them in the same sentence as simple minds or the smiths is really a giant insult.
They weren't terrible but the simple minds made incredible music.
I think flock of seagulls is about right. Maybe howard jones.

Who did they/do they influence?
Tears? No one.
Simple Minds? Possibly.
The Smiths? Definitely.

No Flock of Seagulls brah?

There is no way that Tears for Fears ranks higher than Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, or Duran Duran.
Probably not even Human League.
Nor would I put Devo above the Smiths.
Simple Minds would be 8th at best on that list.

Agreed.
The Smiths are the only band out of those mentioned I ever listen to these days.
Actually I do listen to "I Ran" quite a bit.
