Well if you think about it, you could start the exact same thread about rock music.

Garth made it mainstream, but there was a ton of shite country during the 80s as well.

How he isn’t a household name in the country music genre is beyond me.

I don't know.....but how do you surpass Lee Ann Rimes. Good looks and great pipes and it translates into living classic country songs....motels with other women's husbands, etc. I'm not sure you can.

There’s a lot of great stuff out now to two step and country swing dance to, but as for listening and relaxing, it’s just not very good anymore. It started to tank around 2002 and then went belly up when FGL and Sam Hunt came along

If you want to hear some damn fine songwriting listen to Lost Dog Street Band and/or Benjamin Todd's solo stuff.

Lee Ann Rimes would have been an all time great if not for the fact she was a C U Next Tuesday

I’m a longtime country fan up until about early 2000s. Really love late 60s-late 90s. Country music nearly died early- mid 80s. I was kid then and listened to very little country. After I had gotten older I had read Randy Travis was huge in reviving country music in the 80s. I never knew that but always thought he was pretty great. Late 60s-70s and late 80- early 90s had some of the best country music, IMO.

At times, Waylon’s band resembles a jam band. Far from the waltzy Hank Williams Sr. stuff. Hell WJ wrote songs responding to the people who badmouthed the Outlaw style and image.

Waylon is one of those artist who sounds better live (and he sounds really good on the track). Each show you watch they/he plays and sings songs different (sped up, slowed down, annunciating parts different). It really is magic. I find him and Van Morrison very similar in that regard.

I agree though, from looking at old stuff the outlaw country was heavily opposed and nothing stays the same but for the love of God surely the trend of the radio playing real/good music will come back around for country. The "Nashville Machine" has always been interesting. Although, there is really good country music being made today that isn't mainstream radio stuff.

Even as a kid I remember thinking people like Kenny Chesney and that Australian guy were cringe af. The legends are almost all dead, Hank Jr. is about the last one left.

And just like country, there is still a lot of good music being made if you look for it.

Believe it or not, Luke Bryan was as country as country gets when he first went to Nashville! They sent him home and told him to lose the nasal twang and try again. Now he's all chick music!

You’re right. There is still good music being made. It just doesn’t get publicized for some reason. Unless it’s ghetto rap or pop, good luck finding it.

The Grand Ole Opry is a pretty good source for off the beaten path music, believe it or not. They nearly always have a couple of new artists, nearly always have some bluegrass, and pretty often alt.country or Americana acts.
