No but they are considered a metal band.

so, they probably dont apply to the conversation

The hair metal subset was not called out in particular by the OP though it does sort of seem like that was what he meant.

Extreme is a good answer. The world was just getting exposed to Nuno Betancourt at the time and in early 1991 they were on an upward trajectory and then really they stopped and the band ultimately went their separate ways with Nuno being in demand all over the place and Gary Cherones becoming lead singer for Van Halen . Pornograffitti was not a bad album.

Speaking of Extreme, their new stuff is killer…album comes out June 9th, but they’ve already dropped several tracks. They are all very good.

I feel like that 6 year gap between Black Album and Loan was partially a product of grunge/post-grunge.

I don’t think it really killed any metal bands but it definitely killed what glam metal was turning into which was pretty much gritty street rock. For example:

Spread Eagle - Switchblade Serenade

Skid Row - Monkey Business

Wildside - Hang On Lucy

Would’ve been cool to see where this type of rock would’ve went. I appreciate Grunge for what it was but killer guitar solos and catchy hooks shouted by the whole band were better imo.

Load? That was less than a 5 year gap.

I know in late 1990 the following bands were poised to take off…House of Lords(James Christian’s voice was literally one of the most powerful I have heard. Check out “Remember My Name” by them and thank me later), Queesnryche, Damn Yankees, Firehouse, Trixter, Slaughter, and some of the others mentioned are all candidates for your OP winner.

I went to that show in Houston(Baytown)& they had Candlebox replace AIC. It was Metallica, Candlebox, Suicidal Tendancies, & Fight(Rob Halford's band after leaving Priest).

Where in Baytown did this show happen? I can't imagine any place in Baytown being big enough for that kind of show.
Great lineup though. I'm jealous that you got to see Fight...

Yeah I saw that on the SubPop doc.
They got the British press latched onto it and it blew up.
Great doc, btw....

It was at Raceway Park - and yes, the traffic was miserable!

They released Demons Down in 1992…great album. An interesting nugget: Gregg Giuffria, from Biloxi, was the keyboard player for HOL on that album…he is now part owner of Beau Rivage in his hometown, so he has obviously done very well for himself.

Member of my favorite band as a teenager. They put out some excellent albums in the 70’s.

Winger, Firehouse, Slaughter, Warrant, Mr. Big, and Skid Row were the main early 90's hair bands I remember. All of them were kinda popular right when grunge hit. But at that time I think kids were tired of hair metal in general.

It's hard to say who "started" a genre of music, but often times Pixies are credited with "starting" grunge in 1986. However, there were other bands of similar styles prior to Pixies like Scratch Acid who formed in 1982 in Austin, TX. And across the pond in England you had "Gang of Four." (Cobain admitted he was influenced by both Scratch Acid and Gang of Four).

The Pixies's lead singer admitted he was influenced by Husker Du. The Pixies' guitarist said he loved Black Flag as well as Gang of Four (so both Pixies and Nirvana were influenced by Gang of Four).

Purplepanther beat me to it.

Wildside's Under The Influence would have been big.
