Haven’t went through many guitars yet, but I got a Michael Kelly 53 tele. I really enjoyed it for my second guitar a couple of years ago from a guitar store in hammond.

What guitar brands do you think are underrated and deserves more recognition? (Electric or acoustic)

Yamaha and Ibanez make incredible products at every budget line, particularly electrics and Ibanez Basses.

Yamaha acoustics are some of the best acoustic guitars that it seems like no one (at least no one in the U.S.) talks about. Seagull is another well put together acoustic (I guess the whole Godin umbrella, for that matter, but I'm most familiar with Seagull acoustics).

Came here to say Yamaha acoustic. If you are at a place with a lot of them to get your hands on you will find a gem. 2 might sound "meh" with a high action, and one sounds and feels awesome. You think "what is wrong with this guitar?" Answer? Nothing, just says Yamaha on it.

Sure is. They are great. Can get wild with the woods they use so they look great and sound bright. If you are looking for a "beginner-ish" guitar and got 300-500 bucks? If Seagull is not on your radar, your radar is broken.

I guess I am not really making an "underrated" case for Seagull though as I am raving about them.

I’ve got a Michael Kelly mandolin and love it...

As far as brands that deserve more credit, Collings is above Martin & Taylor for a lot of models

Since acoustics have been mentioned (and I agree with the above assessments of Seagull and Yamaha), and to answer initially without writing a diatribe (although I foresee one at some point haha) ...

I'll answer the question for domestic production electrics ... the USA production output of G&L, Music Man and Hamer (1976-2013). Their products have always been top notch for materials, craftsmanship, features, every assessible category. I have yet to play a turd or dud from any of those companies. They remain affordable in the new (except in the case of Hamer), used and vintage markets, and they pack INCREDIBLE value and bang for one's buck.

I’ve heard great things about Agile, but never gotten to play one myself. G&L’s are excellent. One of their strats with a whammy bar might be my next guitar.

All of the Pacific Rim nations that are in guitar building have been putting out consistently good guitars even in their lowest price points thanks to CNC technology being more affordable and subsequently commonplace in recent times.

The Indonesian-made G&L Tribute Series guitars are unbelievably good for the money. And for Chinese production, the output from whatever factory is producing Eastman is the one I'd watch. Eastman's mid and upper price range guitars are shockingly good, period.

The only Agiles I've had come through the shop have been neck-thrus, made by World Musical Instrument in Korea, and very good. All the best Korean-made stuff out there IMHO seems to come from WMI.

I have a Blueridge acoustic and Hagstrom electric, both made in China. I think they’re pretty nice.

Love my Michael Kelly. Anybody looking for a guitar should check them out.

I’m pretty sure they’re manufactured in Korea. But like fret shack said, due to lower costs a lot of company’s can now make quality guitars versus one or two manufacturers. I feel like there are great quality guitars out there these days other than martins and Taylor’s. (I still want a Martin tho)

I also have an ibanez acoustic that I paid $200 for new and it will hold its own with many guitars that are way above that price point.

I have an almost 50-year-old Yamaha acoustic that belonged to my Dad.

Mine is a CHUNK of wood. Someone was kind enough to upgrade PUs before I bought it. The body of the guitar is great with upgrades that a real Gibson LP would have if you bought a $3000 one.

I have the 53 too. It’s the blue jean wash color. My only complaint about it is because it’s a lefty I couldn’t get the rosewood fretboard.

They’ve got a mod shop now I think so they’re doing higher end electronics in some of their stuff. I know a couple people with them and haven’t heard anything super negative yet.

I know ESP/LTD isn't really underrated but for the price my LTD EC-1000 plays better than Les Pauls costing 3x as much and it's easier to handle with better looks (totally subjective obviously just my opinion) for what I'm trying to do.

I've been wondering about Agile for a while now - they have a ton of variety in their offerings and the prices seem too good to be true. So people are saying they're worth looking into?

So if I wanted to make a $500 Agile sound like a $3000 Gibson, which pickups should I put in it?

The genre to which you lean would help in suggesting pickups, but ...

If you really want it to sound like a great high-dollar Gibson, only better, and more 3D tonally ... Seymour Duncan Antiquity Series humbuckers.
