we went to shows (Billy Strings) in Huntsville and Baltimore over the past two weekends and the nitrous scene is out of control.

In Huntsville, the venue is inside a newish planned mixed use development and would otherwise be the cleanest safest possible place to see a show…and a fan got stabbed by a balloon thug. Baltimore is an urban location and 180 degrees different environment from Huntsville and the damn nitrous thugs were basically at the exit doors.

you spend three hours inside with fantastic energy and step out the venue to noise, harassment, littering and the contact hissing of the tanks and popping of balloons.

Plus (offense intended) you look like a fricking idiot sucking on a nitrous balloon. I’m all about getting your buzz on but that ain’t the way.

these slimeballs are not “part of the scene” and not your friends. They are organized criminals. Stop buying the fricking balloons

but they are doing it right in front of the cops. So it’s either not illegal or they don’t give a shite. I would prefer it if the opposite were the case.

it ruins the whole experience after the show

Back in the day, I personally enjoyed the comedy surrounding the nitrous mafia after shows. At one point I would even salute the creativity of their game. But now a days it's a whole new animal. It's just total reckless caos and the goons running the show as you said are not your friends, nor are they a part of the scene. They're just straight up drug dealers taking advantage of a loop hole.

Oddly enough it's not illegal because it isn't a controlled substance.
They stay on the sidewalks because it's considered a public space. The police can only ask them to clear the sidewalk for pedestrians or they can clear them out if they're on a private lot.

I saw one tank that whole weekend and it had been confiscated by the police. I was surprised I didn't see more. In North Charleston in 2025 it was terrible on the lot. They were set up in between each vendor tent, there were that many

It can be dangerous.....a lot of them are selling industrial nitrous not the medical grade stuff you get at the dentist.

that too. And sometimes the only difference is how clean the tank is. Med grade for inhalation is completely clean because it has to be, industrial grade does not.

so we have dealers that can and will hurt you, selling an unregulated known toxin legally on the street, and infringing on the pursuit of happiness of everyone there while littering the streets with synthetic rubber and the air with noise pollution. And we just shrug our shoulders?

With all the petty bullshite regulations we put up with in a civilized society this is the one we just can’t do anything about?

It's illegal to sell for human consumption without a prescription (21 U.S.C. § 353(b)) and probably under some state laws too. We used to get the little cartridges meant for culinary use in whipping cream. Medical grade nitro purchase requires a medical license so they are probably selling industrial.
