What determines which older songs get played in heavy rotation/played to death?

Old chart position? Music rights? Something else?

I will use the 80's as an example. There is a group of songs that get beaten over our heads on a regular basis (Come on Eileen, Jesse's Girl, etc.) while other great 'nostalgic' tunes from that decade seem to get very little airplay (Wham! songs, various soundtracks, etc). Any ideas?

CSB: For me 'Come on Eileen' has joined 'R-E-S-P-E-C-T' as an overplayed song that I never want hear again.

Stairway To Heaven
Free Bird
We're an American Band
The Joker

Wouldn't hurt my feelings if I never heard any of those again.

I've always wondered this. During the old AOR days they played more deep cuts and B-sides. I used to think with CDs it would be easier to play more tracks, but it went the other way. So many good old tracks, no need to play the same ones over and over and over

I don't understand this either. There's only one station in Houston that plays 60-70's rock and they wear out the same Zep/ZZ/Boston, etc tracks. If they had a station that was similar to the original FM stations from the late 60-early 70's that play album/deep track cuts I think they would have a good following. Sirius/Xm has one station #27 that heads in that direction.

Actually it's two stations with the exact same programming.

The old KlOl 101.1 was great about playing classics and deep cuts with current rock.

Have an upvote.

The thing is, I grew up in the 80's and I don't even remember hearing some of these songs that much.

It's because local radio is essentially dead. Media conglomeration means just a few companies own all of the stations across the nation, and they use the same playlist throughout their entire company. It leads to less and less interesting playlists, and there's no way for songs, particularly old ones, to crack the list. Then you have stations like JACK which is literally programmed by a computer.

A good DJ was like a curator. It's a long lost skill.

If you think about it's incredible how cookie-cutter these playlists really are. Think about the Kinks. Very famous band, sold millions & millions of records over a 20+ year career. And they are on classic rock radio all the time.

But every time the Kinks come on the radio it is always - and I mean always - one of three songs: All Day & All of the Night, You Really Got Me, or Lola. You could listen to 98.1 for five years straight and come away with the impression that those were the only 3 songs Ray Davies had ever written. And we are not talking about obscure tracks that get passed up - consider Sunny Afternoon. A heavily promoted single released by a major record label that spent several weeks on the top 40, hit #1 in England. Yet I have literally never heard it played on a mainstream classic rock station. Meanwhile, Lola has been on daily rotation for decades. It is a complete mystery to me why this is true.

And the Kinks are just an example; you could play this game with every rock band in history. Songs are either played constantly, or never played at all. No middle ground
