I think he’s a fantastic songwriter, he’s written lyrics about so many different subjects and in different styles. Goodnight Saigon is an incredible piece and he wrote it because vets asked him to. Contrast his work with Taylor Swift-another member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame; much of what she writes is about bitterness in some form.

And this is nothing against Billy Joel, he has some outstanding songs. But this one is laughable bad. It happens to everyone. You write a lot of songs over the years, even the best of the best are gonna have some stinkers.

It was very heavy on the 1950s/early 1960s. Watergate was 1972-74 and was in the fifth and final set of verses.
Congo / deconolization was a major event during that time. Easily more significant than Dacron or punk rock.

This is how I feel as well.
He wrote it in response to Sean Lennon saying that nothing significant happened in his early life (he was born in 1975) and this was Billy's way of proving him wrong.
That song came out in 89. But it was pretty clear by then that Billy was running out of gas and ideas to write about and he's admitted as much.

Songs that are mostly lists are too much of a grind for me. Even Johnny singing the Hank Snow song wears me out.

Not a fan of that song at all. It's one that we were forced to listen to on the radio, awkward to sing along with, and not danceable.
People think the concept of the song is so clever but it's basically been done before in Ball of Confusion.
