Fine song by Billy Joel. I was listening to it this morning and realized he sang about stuff that happened from the late 40's to the late 80's. From Harry Truman to the Coke & Pepsi marketing rivalry.
It covers the same amount of time since it came out till now. Damn.

Fall Out Boy also updated it for the following ~35 years (from 1989, when the original song came out, to 2023).

Both songs suck. The Joel version is an instant channel changer. Only heard the fallout girl version once and it reminded me how shitty the original was.

I actually like it but it came out my Senior year of high school so I get flashbacks of that timestamp when I hear it, so the actual song doesn't trigger me as much as you obviously. However, I heard that Joel feels the same way as you about it even though it is actually one of his bigger hits. I wish he would update it to modern times but I doubt that will ever happen even though he has been asked to do it a lot.

Freshman in college, history prof has a bunch of the Joel version references in a bucket. Pull one out and write a short paper on it. I drew children of thalidomide.
Junior year I have an organic chemistry class and for a couple classes we went over enantiomers. Because of that song I got a few questions right on an organic chem test...and potentially kept me out of making a D and pushed me into the C's. Thanks Billy!

When Bridget Bardot died recently they said Bob Dylan and Bernard Goetz (the subway shooter) were the only two people still alive who were mentioned in the song, which is kind of ironic when you think of what music and social/political values have turned into.

The Fall Out Boy version mentions Tiger King if I remember correctly, which is kinda the biggest pop culture thing associated with Covid. So it's covid-adjacent.

It's a good song, but mainly because it is catchy...not because it's actually "good," if that makes sense.
And Billy has said that it's the worst song he's ever written (because it was very simplistic and poor musically).
