Hagar sucks though, just so we are clear.
Whoa now, are kidding me? Check out this awesomeness from 1982's album Standing Hampton.
Can't Get loose
You can't find a more 80's song than that. DX7 Synth intro, power pop chorus, gated reverb drums, and rockin' an Ibanez Destroyer solo!!!

Did you know that a lot of people really HATE that about Van Hagar? They liked the more 70's sound of early Van Halen (no synths prior to 84, no power pop choruses, no gated reverb on the snare, etc).
You site those as a positive, while others site that as negatives. Everyone has different tastes.

I do not call them Van Hagar, that is stupid. Was it Van Roth?
Two different bands and they are both great. Sammy is the better singer and more enjoyable to listen to. As far as the music goes, its all Eddie and it just depends on the mood. And, you can't hold Sammy responsible for that 80's sound, that was mostly Eddie. People always slight Sammy for that and I always ask them if they ever listened to Montrose or the early 80's Sammy solo stuff.

Yes, hence

It's a little asinine, but it's done for a good reason. The band got famous with a very particular sound that people identify as "Van Halen". Few bands have changed their overall sound more between albums than did Van Halen from 1984 to 5150. The two albums don't even sound like the same band. I happen to like both, but the fact that it truly sounds like two different bands due to a lot more than just a different vocalist (see AC/DC), is why people make the distinction. Van Halen is the early stuff, Van Hagar the later stuff. It's all Van Halen, but most people assume you mean the 1984 and prior when you say "Van Halen", so it's just easier to use "Van Hagar" to clue people in that you're discussing later stuff.

I think Eddie gets far less of the blame than he deserves. He was getting heavily into the 80's sound in the 84 album with David Lee Roth. Eddie synth stuff offends me. You have a band with EDDIE VAN F&%KING HALEN and you've got him playing a f&^king keyboard? That's like owning a Ferrari and driving a goddamn Yugo. Maybe my ears our clouded by how much I absolutely hate the sound of synthesizers (like nails on a chalkboard to me), but that's how I feel.

Montrose f&%king slaps, brah. Hard, sweet, and sticky

I know your stance on 80's music but get outta here with that negative shite! I only see positives.
Hagar rockin Heavy Metal live

When I hear gated reverb, I cringe. When I hear synths, I want to claw my ears off. "Heavy Metal" has neither of those things, which is why I love it. I tend to enjoy some 80's rock despite the presence of those things, but they are a major minus, imo.
In my opinion, when you replace gated reverb snare tones with the dryer snares of the 70's and 2000's, and replace synths with hammond organs and/or horn sections, 80's music becomes f&%king awesome.
I want my snares to pop and then vanish, not linger and crowd the mix like a f&%king crash cymbal.

For entire body of work Van Halen. My favorite song is from Van Hagar though.

We are in agreement there. I played Rock Candy the other day for the first time in a while and it is just such a fun rocking song!

Van Halen is my preference and I own, or did at one time, every studio album produced by both incarnations of the band. I always liked Sammy Hagar as a solo artist and he is indeed the better singer. But David Lee Roth epitomized what a rock star is back in the early 1980's when VH was the biggest band in the world.

OU812 was a good album.
Never got the Hagar hate. Other than the line from Joe Dirt.
Previous poster summed it up. Sammy is a good rock vocalist. Dave is a good showman who can sing.
Sammy also just appears to be winning at life. That wasn’t the question, but it points to the toxicity of Van Halen.

Echoing what about everyone else has said one way or another...
Van Halen easily for me...I am of that age when You Really Got Me, Runnin with the Devil, Unchained (my personal favorite), etc was part of my youth and early teenage years of 1984...they owned the radion, MTV, concerts etc...
Then when DLR left, I was like wtf is this...cant think of but one or two Van Hagar songs I like..
That being said, I actually like Sammy Hagar, the person, entrepreneur, Cabo nonsense...he just works so hard.
Montrose was great, some of his solo albums such as Standing Hampton, Three Lock Box, VOA rocked
He was so prolific, he would put out a great album, a dud or two, then another great one...

To listen to, Halen, no question. The first gen simply slays V2.0.
To hang out with, Hagar. Dude seems like a hella fun dude, and knows his way around and bar.

Dave's an infinitely better lyricist than Sammy. The music they up out up to 84 is incomparable.

Halen had the most power, but Hagar had the more range…Eddie-wise.
