Probably saw these two bands more than any other in the 80's. The Cold should have hit it big more nationally, IMO.

Especially after Johnny Marr joined the band even though Matt Thompson is a great songwriter. However my favorite album was in 1992.

I'll also add Public Image Ltd. I'm not sure how underrated they are with Johnny Rotten as the front man but I always liked that band.

Totally agree on the Producers. Those guys had a huge library of great songs. Believe it or not their stuff was not easy to play, maybe it was the great vocals that were hard to hit. Songwriting was very clever as well.

In the 1980's, I had an appreciation for
Bruce Hornsby and The Range. And even though Bruce's band won a grammy for best new artist in 1987, it seemed like it took a while for their act to catch on. First three records were high quality and then there was a big dropoff for a while. Bruce's music, while well-written, was not completely geared for a top-40 sound.
I also enjoyed listening to the Outfield. Loved the sound they produced but they quietly disappeared after about 1988.
I also enjoyed Paul Carrack's music and some of his acts with Mike and the Mechanics.

the producers, absolutely. i read that their "actual" producer tom werman ceased ties with portrait records (which was the sister label of epic/columbia at the time) because he was livid over the lack of promotion they were giving the band....

I felt the same way back when, and I was looking forward to seeing him at Jazz Fest this year. However, I and everyone I was with was EXTREMELY underwhelmed at his performance. Sort of veering off here and there in songs, but NOT sounding like a great improviser. Bonarama got on stage with him and it was a total disaster. Bunch of folks left the set early.
Anyways...sorry!

Lots of good choices in this thread.
I was going to mention Clan of Xymox, but someone above beat me to it.
They are incredible, and still putting out amazing albums as recent as last year.
I guess I will throw The Alarm out there.
Love this band, but they got (undeservedly) maligned and forgotten because they were in the same era as U2 was exploding, and had a similar sound.
Check out their "Eye of the Hurricane" album from 1987. Brilliance.

Another great IRS band. They were the poor man's U2 but I love the band too. I watched a Mike Peters documentary special about his battle with cancer a few years ago. It was pretty interesting.
I think their Electric Folklore live album is very underrated for a live album. Spirit of '76 FTW!!!
