The best rock 'n roll band of the 1980's was the Replacements. Matter of fact, they are one of the best bands of all time. But shite, Bon Jovi never heard of them, so they can't be great, right?

The Church.... One hit wonder in the US, but they are still putting out music.

How his song "Wouldn't It Be Good" didn't even chart in the U.S. is beyond me. Great song that hit #1 on the British charts.
I'd also throw Icehouse out there as well. People here made a big deal about the lead singer's mullet but their biggest hits "Crazy" and "Electric Blue" are very good pop songs.

A lot of great ones already mentioned,I would throw in some weird stuff like Tom Tom Club (Talking Heads members Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth) and The Tubes-who were for sure rated but largely forgotten.

Sorry to laugh at a dead waitress, but I REALLY didn't like them... And while not necessarily "underrated" in their day, I think these two were/are under-appreciated.
The Fixx--back then I like them but I thought there sound got a bit old...really like listening to them now.
The Straycats--probably the only popular rockabilly band back then---that's why I loved 'em. Have seen Brian Setzer several times since then...dude is awesome.

While I may have overrated her sax playing (i WAS young!), I did like the band itself.
