While I really do like Gloria, and sorta like more early songs, the rest is terrible. No one very really liked U2
But the part that made me laugh was:

A new study has confirmed what scientists have long suspected: no one has ever actually enjoyed U2's music; it's just that everyone thought that everyone else did and no one wanted to be the one to speak up and make things awkward.
But the part that made me laugh was:

Similar research is being conducted on the popularity of Encanto.

Saw U2 at the Hartford Civic Center in 1987. They played 2 or 3 nights and they all sold out. My Deadhead taper friend called me up and said come on down so I did. Never heard of them. Got there and we had to sneak in. Some guy popped the fire door for us and we were in. The house lights were on and Stand by Me was playing. All of a sudden Bono came out and the volume went up full blast. With the house lights on Bono finished the tune and the crowd went crazy. Gave me goose bumps. I actually really enjoyed it the concert. That being said I never listen to them by choice.

I find these trends of all of a sudden hating successful bands to be very odd.

Greatest band of all time measured by any metric. Haters will disagree and jam Red Hot Chili Peppers to block the truth.

I've never been a fan of either band. Greatest band of all time measured by any metric sounds like a pretty major stretch, though. Can you name any of them? Ever heard of The Beatles?

I'm mostly messing. I know many don't like them but U2 is my favorite band and they get too much hate

The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree are incredible albums.
I’ve really seen the “it’s cool to hate on U2” thing go into overdrive in the last few years. Ridiculous, imo.

Early U2 is legit greatness, I’ll give you that. Post Achtung U2 is garbage

U2 has been lampooned for a long time due to Bono coming across as kind of a tool. That hate went into overdrive when iTunes automatically uploaded one of their albums to everyone’s ipod and iphone.

I still can’t believe someone signed off on that.

The problem I have with U2 is that with only a few exceptions almost every song is The Edge (ironically the least edgy guitar player ever) hammering away at one chord while bono screams
buc-a buc-a buc-a buc-a buc-a buc-a buc-a
Terribly uncreative and formulaic in my opinion.
That being said I really like a few songs of theirs.
Music is so subjective it’s tough to judge.

I love the sound of bass guitars and Adam Clayton is pretty good IMO.
Think that's why I've always liked them, they have some great Bass grooves in their music, especially the early stuff up until Achtung.
