It is my belief that Maynard has had the finished Master of the new album in his safe at his vineyard for years. He just plays these games about release dates to frick with Adam.

Many Tool fans already did that with 10K Days. When it was released, many people were disappointed and some fans came up with conspiracy theories that what had been released was a "decoy album" and that Tool was just trolling everyone. The real album would be released soon after the "decoy album."
It was hilarious to follow.

Drums were first thing done and Adam posted multiple videos to his IG of him in the studio with Joe recording his portion. There was speculation that Maynard was recording back in October and everyone else’s parts were done seems to be true.
