Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - What a great band !
Their music is timeless. I was just watching this concert from Rockpalast 1977, and it still sounds great almost 50 years later.

One of the best songwriters ever in my opinion.

Like to hear your thoughts on his music

He was badass. This was my anthem in 1980.

I'm a big fan and my thoughts are more than I care to type.
They had it figured out IMO.

Big music nerd at work had a pretty convincing argument that Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are the greatest American band to ever do it. What say the music board?

An argument can definitely be made to back that. His first 6 albums are amazing.

Cool backstory. Tom Petty was recording this song and producer Jimmy Iovine suggested it would make a great duet with Stevie Nicks.

Petty was not too interested, but Iovine put the hard sell on him, so he agreed.

Petty later found out Iovine was secretly fricking Stevie and was using his influence to help her.

if you haven't seen the Tom Petty documentary directed by Peter Bogdanovich I highly recommend it - Runnin Down a Dream. Once of better music docs out there - and at over 4 hours of running time it doesn't cut corners but never gets boring. Just a great documentary.

Stevie wanted to become a Heartbreaker. Tom allowed her to be the Heartbreakers' little sister.

I dig this live version (which is quite different from the original) at Bonnaroo 2006:

Falls into the category for me of "I enjoy some of the stuff when it comes on, but would never consider actually spending money on any aspect of it - recorded or live".

Best song is I Won't Back Down

Friends tell me the Mike Campbell autobio is must-read.

2nd fav is live at Concert for George doing "I Need You".

I was playing "Breakdown" recently (on guitar). Very simple song yet very effective. Mike Campbell brought great parts to Toms songs.
