Tim Poole is not exactly a music expert

Dumb take
Taylor Swift is absurdly popular

Moscow concert. Over a million people. Top that, Taylor

Tim should stick to Russian propaganda.

If Taylor went to a big enough population center willing enough to accommodate that many at an event, and sold tickets for a reasonable price she could probably top it pretty easily TBF.

Metallica is obviously way better musically than Taylor Swift, but people let their love of an artist and their music cloud their judgement.
I couldn't name more than 3 songs of Taylor Swift, but I know that she is probably as popular as any musical act in modern history.
Metallica cannot say that. Not even close.
Taylor is at Michael Jackson levels currently.

When will her scandal come out?

what does "bigger" mean? culturally? influentially? "hits"?
bigger is very generic. i'll say metallica is 1000x more influential than taylor swift musically. think of all of the bands that were influenced by metallica. think of how lars and metallica basically ended napster and indirectly ended the CD album market in just a few years.
bigger is subjective IMO.

The problem with this is that we are all in our musical bubble. I don't know much about her music, but I have daughters so I have been around it. I even saw her in concert very early in her career.
While Metallica is a very influential band, Taylor Swift has influenced countless other pop stars and even had a hand in blurring the lines between pop music and country music.
Again, she's not my cup of tea, but the suggestion that Metallica is in any way "bigger" is absurd.
Just on Spotify alone, Taylor has 82 million monthly listeners to Metallica's 27 million.

Who cares? Why are we comparing Swift to Metallica?
Posted on 4/1/25 at 9:51 am to prplhze2000
Its not an apples to apples comparison. Both are the biggest on a world scale with their genre.
An example soccer is way bigger than American Football. Does that mean Soccer is better?

This is being a bit obtuse IMO. When Taylor swift comes to a stadium for multiple nights in basically any city there are ticket lotteries and lotteries for simply being on the waiting list. Face value tickets are hundreds of dollars for anywhere in a stadium. If you don’t win the lottery you are paying 1000 dollars for nosebleeds.
I’m not a fan, but I am a dad with kids who associate with kids who are fans and I talk to their parents. The process for even getting tickets is insane. There is no other act in entertainment even on the same planet worldwide. In an era where musicians and movie stars have lost a lot of pop culture relevance to online content creators, she’s arguably as big and influential a star as anyone in history.

in 2025, swift is more popular. but is she "bigger?" what metric is that based on?

my point is, it's a silly discussion.

Yeah but how many CD's/album/cassettes units has she sold? It's not an easy comparison. I only know about her from my daughters. My daughters know about Metallica through me. What does it mean? Nothing. There is such a huge gap in the generations of their respective popularity. If I didn't have daughters, I'd say Metallica easily. But holy cow she's everywhere and selling out stadiums 3-4 nights in a row almost every weekend for the last 2 years it seems. That's mega.

Metallica is Taylor swift for former latchkey kids that work with their hands

Very true. And looking at her business acumen, I say Taylor Swift is like Lars Ulrich in lipstick and heels. And taller.

Did you see Metallica's tour? Was touring at the same time and playing multiple dates in each city. Sold them all out. Arenas just like Taylor.
