I don't think they were ever rated as one of the best bands ever, but certainly had an appeal to a group of people that could be considered the greatest following ever certainly.
I saw them in Atlanta in 1992 and you got a sense of the spectacle that was their shows even if i didn't know any of those 12 minute chicken dance inducing songs.
and a damn good tomato and cheese sandwich out front.

This. Exactly my feelings.
They are one of those bands that I like their greatest hits album, but not much more.
What I often wonder is why Garcia gets mentioned as one of the elite guitarist. He is good, but never has blown me away. Never have I put on a dead track just to hear his pickin.
Is it bc of his writing abilities and improv?

Jerry wrote some of the greatest songs ever written and certainly is a great improvisational guitarist. But I always thought he had a sense of timing that most guitarist didn't possess. He also had a way of tapping into a deep emotional place with his singing. Morning Dew, Comes a Time, Fire on the Mountain.
I dont think there is a better live moment in music than when Jerry yells "I wish I was headlight on a northbound train!!" during I Know You Rider. That's the stuff that makes The Grateful Dead unlike any other band.

They are properly rated as a popular niche band (jam music) with a dedicated following, but no one seriously argues they are a top tier band. I think the licorice analysis works, and that's how the Dead are generally rated.
Now, you want overrated? Bruce Springsteen. He's often cited as one of the greatest artists of all time and I, blasphemy intended, think he's inferior to John Mellencamp (who I think is extraordinarily underrated, primarily because he's apparent a bit of a jerk while Bruce is famously nice to everybody).

That Playin in the Band is absolutely insane. I used to have that show on a maxell XL2 90 about 15 years ago. I need to revisit it. I remember the Dark Star being other worldly as well.

If you don't 'get' the whole 'Grateful Dead thing' take some acid and put in a live Dark Star. There's nothing to get, it's noodle music for people on drugs.
The infatuation was merely people with no place to go, scrounging enough money to get a ride to the next show. It became a lifestyle that was NOT about the music, it was about community.
So if you're listening to a shitty Dead show from the 90s thinking to yourself 'these hippies hate good music,' you're not alone. Many of the people in the crowd were thinking the same thing. But it didn't matter, because people didn't go for the music anyway.
The infatuation was merely people with no place to go, scrounging enough money to get a ride to the next show. It became a lifestyle that was NOT about the music, it was about community.

Oh I love the music too, but there are more than a few groaners in the GD repertoire.
Which is why when people hear a shitty song they don't understand the bands' popularity. It was about much more than the music, it was a way of life.

Well put. When I started listening to the Dead is also when I abandoned radio music entirely and started to listen to a wide variety of musical styles from Blues to Cajun/Zydeco to Alt. Country to Bluegrass. They can be the gateway drug of music. Ironic thing is I've never listened to the Dead while under the influence of drugs. They are fine on their own merits.

Yeah, not everyone understood the Dead, and that's fine, not everyone is going to love them, but you can't take away the fact they were excellent musicians. Now I draw the line when people start telling me how great & talented some rap 'artist' is...
