I wouldn't say they are that highly rated. They just have a cult following.

Now I draw the line when people start telling me how great & talented some rap 'artist' is...
Wow, you must be quite the art lover to dismiss offhand an entire genre of music you probably know next to nothing about.

I believe that The Grateful Dead are one of the most overrated bands in history.
The Grateful dead are a uniquely American band that capture blues grass, blues and the psychedelia of American music. Their early work is their best and if you don't listen to it thinking of the Grateful dead or "rock and roll" and hear it for the american sound I think you'd appreciate it more. It's obviously a modern (for that time) take on the music. Their later work suffers as it became to detached IMO.
Also I like a lot of old dead but hate most dead heads (same with Phish heads except I hate them and the band)...and generally I'm an indie rock fan that listens to a wide range of music beyond that niche.

The Grateful Dead - Overrated?
Underrated. They're one of those bands I got into later in life and once I did I regretted not getting into them sooner.

That's just insane.

I just can't really listen to their studio albums.
Then you don't like the Grateful Dead. They have some incredible studio albums.
Saying they are best band ever wouldn't even be overrating them.

I've had people explain to me that they are a concert band, and maybe that is the problem. I just can't really listen to their studio albums.
funny, I really like their studio albums, but not a fan of the live stuff.

Now, you want overrated? Bruce Springsteen. He's often cited as one of the greatest artists of all time and I, blasphemy intended, think he's inferior to John Mellencamp
Pfft.
Nebraska alone makes this statement absurd, IMO.

Havent really read the thread but
They continuously toured sold out shows for almost 30 years. They are one of the greatest American rock bands of all time. They are not overrated.
They have a catalog of hundreds of songs, most of which are great. Jerry and Robert Hunter are among the finest rock/folk lyricists of all time. They are not overrated.
Of course their live shows are better than their studio stuff, but their studio stuff is no slouch. Workingman's Dead, and American Beauty are two GREAT albums. They are NOT overrated.
