I don't know who had the better three album run: Dylan with Bringing it All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde; The Beatles with Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and The White Album; or The Stones with Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St.
Oh, also while we're doing this:
David Bowie
Prince
U2
The Replacements
The Velvet Underground

Most great bands can be listed. Some good bands can be listed.

yeah i'm seeing that the more this thread grows.
i guess i listen to alot of 2-album wonder shitty artists.
clearly lots of artists out there have maintained quality over a long period of time.

Ryan Adams (& The Cardinals)
Not sure if they are too obscure to qualify, but I'd say Heartbreaker, Gold, Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, and Easy Tiger are all held in pretty high regard.
Also loved his cover of 1989 (Taylor Swift). Not many people could have pulled that off.

or.. did you mean they ONLY put out 3? In that case STP Core Purple Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop
STP had more than 3 studio albums, but these 3 albums in a row are as good as any first 3 releases by any band in recent memory. While others may have had slightly better commercial success, STP & Alice In Chains had incredible studio albums and were probably the strongest live performers of the era.

Every Led Zeppelin studio album was great.
There - I said it.

The OP definitely is advocating a group, as there are few bands that lasted for only three albums, and all three were great.
Three album run, is different, and nobody´s mentioned the obvious.

No I mean albums on a row with little to no drop in quality
Hold on, it has to be 3 consecutive albums?
Also, I saw where somebody posted that the beatles meet this test: so I'm guessing that word "great" is somewhere between flexible and quite flexible?

Spoon definitely meets this test and may well double it.

First two for sure. I disagree that the third is great.
