Yes, and I don't believe it to really be particularly close.

I'll take Seven Bridges Road any day over The Weight

I don't think The Band is bad, per say, and I often find the Eagles to be overrated due to how overplayed some of their big hits became, but I still prefer their sound to that of The Band. The Eagles simply have incredible harmonies in songs like "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Lying Eyes", etc that The Band just can't touch. I'm a sucker for great vocal harmonies.

I don't dislike The Band, and I understand "The Weight" as a drinking song, but I really never understood why they were so highly regarded. It's not bad, but it's really not that interesting to me compared to the music being made by a lot of their peers. It doesn't strike me as particularly innovative, it's not driving, it's not exceptionally poetic, the lead singer isn't some overwhelming talent, neither is the lead guitarist some virtuoso. In an era of titans, they're just a well-executed folksy rock act.

There's nothing wrong with that, it's not really my thing, and they just don't compare to a lot of their contemporaries who were making music that, to me, was a lot more exciting, innovative, and/or difficult to reproduce.

2) Allman Bros

3)Eagles
4)The Band

I was never really a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, even though most of my friends in high school in the 80s were still listening to them. But I've really grown to respect their music as I've gotten older.

If you aren't a fan of abstract, "the song means whatever you think that it means" lyrics, Ronnie Van Zant might be the most underrated lyricist to ever live. He painted very vivid pictures with a limited number of stokes.

The cool thing about The Band is they used really cool older instruments, like French horns, pipe organs, calliope, etc. that made for a really unique, creative sound. Their lyrics also harkened back to a time when those instruments were popular, ala the night they drove ole Dixie down. Their songwriting was as good as anyone and they were great instrumentally. Garth Hudson, Rick danko, Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm.
Just great all around. There is A LOT more than The Weight.

Skynrd was good but basically copied what the ABB were doing and weren’t as good IMO.

Nothing wrong w the eagles, they just aren’t on the same level as those two

The Band is truly a line in the sand for someone who has good taste in music. If you don’t “get” The Band there’s almost a certainty your musical taste is shite.

The Eagles always brings out the haters.

Music is so subjective. Everyone likes different stuff. Sometimes it’s based on your exposure, or it may be a memory it triggers.

Probably a lot like y’all I grew up listening to the eagles. Great songs, great harmonies. These days I don’t search out their music and would probably flip the station if they came on. I know all their big tunes and can sing along w the best of em.
