I can say that the guys in The Band were good musicians and not like the way they sound, not enjoy their music. It’s ok.

That's how I feel about them. I don't hate their sound but it's not for me.

I know a few people that hate Steely Dan. I don't get it but it doesn't affect me.

The original Skynyrd were well on their way to being the best American band ever. They were just cut short due to the crash. Hell, Ronnie never made it to his thirties. Let that sink in. They were making some of the greatest music ever. In their twenties. It’s just a shame they were taken so young.

You are 100% spot on and I agree with this entire post. It’s incredibly accurate but it’s going to really rile up the phags on here about their beloved Band.

Just came here to say that if your judging The Band based on The Weight, you’re listening to the wrong songs.

Other than “The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down”, “The Weight”, and “Up on Cripple Creek”, what songs would you recommend?

Those are the only ones I ever hear played anywhere.

I assume you’ve seen the last waltz

Rock of ages is great love album

They have a deep songbook. Big pink, northern lights and the band are a good place to start

Hell, just start listening to their catalog. I know you are a musician. This is a musician's band.

I did not. I didn't even say they were bad. I just said they're not my cup of tea. I'm not that big into folk rock (especially not Bob Dylan who wrote a lot of songs for The Band) unless it's got really good vocal harmonies (see Crosby, Stills, & Young), which I haven't heard much of from The Band.

I also listen to a fair amount of jazz and zydeco so using french horns and accordions doesn't exactly impress me. I wasn't born until about 20 years after The Band wasn't popular anymore. My parents really didn't listen to them either, and the radio only really plays the two main songs I mentioned earlier, which don't do anything for me, really.

Having listened to the songs that were recommended, I still think they're alright, but there's just nothing that special in my mind. They remind of Blood, Sweat, & Tears with better songwriting but worse vocals. There's a lot of bands that were around in the late 60's/early 70's doing similar things, but better, imo. There's nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't resonate with me because it's not my favorite kind of music. I don't really like Pink Floyd or Phil Collins either, and catch a lot of shite for that.

I'm a hard rock guy. I like upbeat, driving, distorted guitars and crashing drums. The reasons why the Band isn't at the top of my list should be obvious. My favorite band ever is Led Zeppelin, and I love playing Van Halen and 70's Aerosmith. The Band isn't that kind of rock.

Using a french horn and an accordion in a folk rock song just isn't enough to impress me, especially when it's not even unique for the era in which it was made (Chicago, Weather Report, Van Morrison, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, etc were all experimenting with unusual instruments in the same types of songs).

Once again, there is absolutely nothing wrong with The Band. There is something wrong with coming after me for not preferring them over the Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, and the Eagles. I get it's cool to hate on the Eagles because of classic rock radio and the Big Lebowski, but they have a pretty deep catalog with a lot of variety and incredible vocal harmonies. The Allman Brothers Band had some of my favorite guitarists which I've worked very hard to emulate in my music career. Skynyrd write the kind of fun driving rock music that made me want to pick up a guitar in the first place with songs like "Call Me the Breeze", "I Know a Little", "Freebird", and "Gimme Three Steps".

The same goes for Zappa and The Band. I can appreciate that they're talented and respected as musicians. It's just not my kind of music, I guess.

While I enjoy Rush and Zappa and The Band (just not as much as the other 4 bands mentioned), I completely understand why someone else wouldn't.
