Christ on a cracker, half these folks on this list aren't even proficient with the instruments they claim to play.

I believe that's the definition of a "musician"

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that either A, you don't play an instrument and B, if you do, you never took the time to learn to solo on it. However my gut feeling is you only play the radio and your iTunes.

The best thing Kurt Cobain did for his musical legacy was die.

I like him and I like Nirvana. But he is so overrated, as are most musicians/athletes/actors who die young. You only see them at their best and don't see them decline.

He was the third best guitarist in Nirvana and the second best singer. When the drummer is a better guitarist and singer than you, then perhaps you are not that great.

I truly don't get it and never have. Aside from dying young, the only other thing he has in his favor is being on teh ground floor of a "movement" of radically changing musical tastes. People think early 90s, they think grunge, they think the seattle scene. I get it! It makes sense. But people talk about him as if he's some sort of musical legend when he wasn't all that musically advanced in any capacity. It's madness.

Politically correct hipsters made that list lol Public Enemy, Nine Inch Nails, Sinead, Outkast, and several others have no business being on that list other than to assuage guilt for not having enough minorities which is why so many so called experts rank Aretha Franklin and James Brown so high

Bullspit. He was widely regarded as the best pop MUSICIAN ever before he died.

You (and others) just couldn't get past all of his androgynous bullshite to see how great he was.

So you're of the opinion that Springsteen is a better musician than Prince was, right?

Tory Amos at 5? Killer Mike at 17 and Tracey Chapman at 19. GTFO

Do I think Prince was a decent musician? Probably

Did he make really shi!!y music? Most definitely

However, according to the itinerary for the list they compiled it's not actually who the "best musicians" are. From the very first paragraph this is what they state; "we never kidded ourselves, nor intended to kid you, that we could succeed in definitively choosing the 40 greatest, most important, creative, and successful music makers in the last 40 years. Many great artists didn’t make the cut. We did try to get this as right as possible, and, if it's any consolation to you for your favorite artist that's not on the list, no one was satisfied with the outcome.

I'd say we're like a big, dysfunctional family, but the word "like" would be redundant. We argued and advocated, and internally there were those who wondered, for instance, why Bowie is on the list, when some say he peaked pre-1985, but Kendrick Lamar isn't. The deciding view was that Bowie had not peaked and still made great music until his death in 2016 (literally up until the days before he died). i.e. this list has little to nothing to do with musicianship. The fact that rappers are on this list should give you a hint that musical proficiency has zero to do with anything here.

Not shocked but MJK should be on the list.

Fronts 3 successful bands.

Fan of his or not, not sure there are 40 better artists over that time frame.

I have ears. I listen to music. I appreciate musical excellence even among genres that otherwise interest me little. IMO, Prince was mediocre in all respects. If I had never heard a Prince song I would've missed out on nothing musically.

FTR, I used to play piano ok and only played solos. But my ability to play piano has little to do with my view of Prince. And I don't even know what iTunes is.

I'd like to hear more about this specifically. By saying "probably" that means there's a chance that he also may not be. I'm curious what would leave the door cracked for you to insinuate that Prince was not a decent musician.

There is no legit way to leave the door cracked to Prince NOT being an amazing musician.

Anyone that thinks otherwise can ask (if they ever meet any of the following), Clapton, McCartney, Simmons, Jagger about their opinion on how great Prince was. Hell, the Slipknot dude was in tears when he heard about his passing. Duff Mckagan and Dave Grohl will also set people straight on Prince's ability.

All of the above, and many others have proclaimed how great he was, and in some cases have called him the greatest popular musician of all time.

I personally believe that they would have more insight and understanding of his ability and greatness than us yoyos on the music board.

Sure, but isn't it subjective? I could concede that he was probably a good musician, but I found his music absolutely awful, and guitar playing, while it's obviously pretty good and proficient, I thought it was overrated. The shite he played during the concert for George, was just that. Noodling showboating shite.

You like his musicianship, and I don't. We'll leave it at that.

But once again, this list, isn't about the "40 best musicians". There's fuc%ing hip hop artists and rappers on it.

Agreed. It’s more in the lore than anything I guess. Nirvana had some decent stuff and I guess cobain was “punk” but their stuff doesn’t really do it for me. He went out in his prime and it’s got more shock value than musical presence

There is no debate here, prince was a very talented musician. I don’t LOVE his catalog but there’s no doubt he was very good at his craft
