Sure, but isn't it subjective?

no, it isn't.

It'd be like me saying "I guess Messi is likely good at soccer. But I mean, its' subjective". "I guess Tom Brady was ok at playing QB, although some may disagree".

These aren't opinion/taste driven things here. Prince is objectively, without any shadow of a doubt, a great musician. Now whether you actually LIKE his music or not is certainly subjective and you may think he sucks arse, which of course is fine. But to say he's "probably" a good musician is just an insult to English and how we use words.

Agreed. It’s more in the lore than anything I guess. Nirvana had some decent stuff and I guess cobain was “punk” but their stuff doesn’t really do it for me. He went out in his prime and it’s got more shock value than musical presence

what's wild though is that none of the others that died young get the catapult he does. Sure people like Hendrix and Morrison are looked at favorably, but nobody is putting lists together calling them the best musicians of all time or anything like people do with cobain.

The onjly thing I can figure is that these dumbass lists are put together by people that are between 45-60 years old that were in HS or college as that scene was exploding and it's a nostalgia thing for them because of how they personally resonate with it.

So the young probably liberal writers at Spin Magazine wanted to be inclusive so they added in some rap. Actually some of the rap ain’t that bad. They left a lot of artists out but they had to narrow it to 40 cuz of the whole 40 in 40. Anyway I think they did a pretty good job for the 80’s and 90’s
Amirite?
Except for Cobain

You're comparing the measures of statistics and or records in sports to musical proficiency? OK

There is no debate here, prince was a very talented musician. I don’t LOVE his catalog but there’s no doubt he was very good at his craft

No McCartney, no care.

No Jackson Browne, list is truly stupid.

Its the last 40yrs, so 1986 to now.

Their best work was in the 60's/70's. Hell a number of names being called out all pre-date the time period stated.

List still fricking blows.

I was gonna say it was similar to someone who’s never swung a golf club saying (insert any pro) was probably okay. But yes to your point. The smart thing is always listening to other credited musicians, all of whom would say yes prince was a gifted musician

There should be no debate here - as far as "popular" music styles, one doesn't get much more talented than someone who can play any instrument well and composed as much music (for himself and others) as Prince did. Liking what he did is, yes, another matter, but the respect should be there for anyone talking about/knowledgeable about popular music.

It is the Killer Mikes and pop princesses on the list. Was Madonna talented? Certainly there was a minimum level of vocal talent. She had no real impact beyond that early catalog (and, fair dinkum, the first four albums were impactful, for sure) - but she relied on shock value far too long, once it wore off, it was just hardcore fans left. She was not a composer. She was not an instrumentalist.

It's laughable that Public Enemy, Sinead O'Connor and Madonna are ahead of "dozens" of other artists, both on the list below them and not on the list.

I mean, Bjork is on this list (#38) and Tool isn't. You do the math.

I have some respect for him. He was a multi instrumentalist. That's about where it ends.

Prince should be on there. He did Parade, Sign O' the Times (brilliant), Love Sexy, The Black Album, and Diamonds and Pearls in the last 40 years.
