A thread to discuss the Stoner Metal/Sludge/Doom/Post-metal/Blues Rock/Psychedelia rock sounds

Bands of the moment:

Pallberer
All Them Witches
Royal Thunder
Causa Sui
Biblical
Kadavar
The Dead Weather

just to name a few of the recent post from bands with NEW music within the last year

As you scroll threw the many pages you will see recommendations galore from all sorts of sub genres of the type of music mentioned above. Click links, see artwork, and discuss... most of all SHARE YOUR MUSIC FINDINGS

I have quoted the OP:
quote:

Overall this is my favorite type of music. I love the way most ''stoner'' metal acts try and capture the nostalgia of classic rock with their funky artworks and fullfilling song time.
I tried to think of the best three songs to describe the "stoner" genre. These aren't the bible, but rather some defining songs IMO. Hope you take the time to listen:
SLEEP- Dragonaut
Kyuss- Demon Cleaner
Electric Wizard- funeralopolis

Feel free to drop tracks from all the mentioned genres or similar.

NO HOLDS BAR

Another simply outstanding recommendation. I cannot get over how so many of the bands you mention are love at first listen. Every single song is righteous on this one. --Sayre

Would QOTSA be considered stoner metal? Not really a fan of metal and not familiar with the sub genres...

Anyway, saw them at Stubb's in Austin in 2002 and they were pretty damn good...

If they arent considered stoner metal, disregard above...

I consider them stoner metal. Josh Homme is one of the big names in the genre going way back.

Anything by Fu Manchu

Fu Manchu - Mongoose

This is a good one that was on the soundtrack ofHighway. The Desert Sessions was a collaboration from a lot of different Stoner Rock acts.
The Desert Sessions - Johnny the Boy

Some of these may be borderline stoner rock.
Corrosion of Conformity - Albatross

Alabama Thunderpussy - Heathen

Sonic Flower - Goin Down

Kyuss - Gardenia

I consider this the first Stoner Rock tune:
Black Sabbath - Wheels of Confusion

Dawg fan you bring up a good point. If you were to trace back the roots of what is now stoner metal. Would it lead you to Black Sabbath??

besides those mentioned I also like Karma To Burn, Nebula, Masters of Reality, Samsara Blues, Monster Magnet, & Giant Robot in the Stoner domain. Dunno if all those slide into the specific Sludge category tho.

Anyone who has never checked out The Desert Sessions (10 volumes) do it. A lot of gems to be found. Some amazing playing for first take stuff. Also several QOTSA songs before they recorded them as a band. The Sessions have a lot of Homme, Catching & Goss. Most anyone associated with the Palm Desert music scene can be found on them.

I'm curious what y'all think about this group. A group out of Austin led by someone I know. Good? Bad? Average?

Slurr: Noun the Verb

I really haven't been into this genre, but it is growing on me.

Impossible to do this genre justice without mentioning any of Wino's bands
Saint Vitus

The Obsessed

Spirit Caravan

Wino

Most stoner bands are influenced by Black Sabbath, but most of their music was just a heavy version of blues. The real originators of the stoner rock sound was Pentagram

Some more modern bands
Weedeater

Buzzoven

Bison BC

Bongzilla

This is one of my favorite genres overall and one I could go on all day about.

Indeed lots of good tunes. If you go back and look at who has played in the desert sessions that alone should make you want to check it out.

quote:

The Desert Sessions began in August 1997 at the Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree when Homme brought together musicians from the bands Monster Magnet, Goatsnake, earthlings?, Kyuss (his own band, which had split in 1995) and Soundgarden.[citation needed] The ranch is an old house filled to the brim with rare and unique recording equipment and instruments and was owned by Dave Catching and the late Fred Drake. Songs are written "on the spot", and in matters of hours. Many stories have grown around the Sessions. For example, the song "Creosote" from Volumes 9 & 10 was written by Dean Ween and Alain Johannes on the ranch's front porch within four minutes of meeting each other.[citation needed] Similarly, Chris Goss and PJ Harvey wrote the song "There Will Never Be A Better Time" for I See You Hearin' Me after going out onto the porch of the ranch for four minutes with an acoustic guitar; they re-entered the house and recorded the song in one take, the only time the song was ever played by the collective.[1]
