I am sure Peart and Carey can play that, because they are at the top of the craft. My point is so is Harrison and quite a few others. Harrison deserves more recognition, because he is a master.

Drummers and masterclass musicians know who he is and how good he is. You don't drive the King Crimson bus without a shite-ton of respect.

I'm a huge fan of these guys:

Bernard Purdie
Johnny Vidacovich
Stanton Moore
Zigaboo

I wish I could play the skins 1/100th as well as any of these dudes.

Gavin Harrison - Cymbal Song

Silly exercise, but it really shows how much Gavin understands melody on top of rhythm.

That's really cool! I'll have to mess around with that some later today.

Check out this 2:40 tutorial from Pretty Purdie and how he describes ghost notes.

Morello was one of the greatest instructors to ever live. That guy taught thousands of guys who went on to be world class drummers.

Damned fine player.

If we are talking techniques then a guy like Tomas Asklund.

If just antics and bullshite, then a guy like Bonham.

Interesting article, as it referenced Stax with Al Jackson.

Best part was the reference to Keith Moon as the influence for Animal on the Muppets.

Lars Ulrich should be on any list of greatest drummers.

Stewart Copeland

Became the poster boy for people who know frick all about drumming. Backlash ensued.

Been quiet for years.

I believe he's still the GOAT.

There's a simple test. A test which Peart passes as well, but I don't think Peart has the Copeland nuance or chops. In fact from what I've seen, Peart is a humble man, and would admit it.

Think of what you consider most potent or iconic of each and every. Copeland can do it.

Yes, will sound slightly different, but I know in my heart of hearts, he can do a bang up job.

Peart has been working on swing for eons, and he will even say he's become a much better drummer (which in and of itself is amazing), but he can't shake that mechanical feel.

I would add in Will Calhoun as one of the best drummers
Will Calhoun Spotlight

In early Living Colour videos he was always playing traditional grip. Really good at rock and jazz drumming

Really the question being addressed in this kind of thread is, “Name a drummer who did something so original and interesting in his era that he really stood out among others.”

For that discussion, folks like Peart deserve to be at around the top of the list.

But if you look at another way, like name a drummer who designed his track to perfectly enhance the overall music, it becomes a much different discussion. Ringo Starr enhanced the Beatles music tremendously but he is incapable of doing what Peart or Buddy Rich did.
