So someone in the favorite song thread mentioned "Slow Show" by the National.

I'm a 50+ bluegrass, classic country, southern rock etc guy and would have never found this. I have to say thanks, that was a good tip.

Been listening to them for a couple weeks now. Lyrically great songs, and their style is surprisingly appealing to me. I figured out Slow Show on the D-18 including the beautiful coda.

They are fantastic. Boxer is a all-time top ten album for me.

The National is very good. I find them to be an acquired taste. When you first listen to them, it seems low key and boring. The more you listen, the more you discover their layers and exceptional skills. They are far from boring once you "get" their sound.

I never found them boring, personally. But I would definitely agree that the majority of their albums are massive growers that get better and better with more listens.

I’m astounded by the love they receive on this site. I just can’t get into it. To each his own I guess.

Never were boring to me. I was hooked the first time I listened to Alligator.

You have to dig through a lot of their discography to appreciate their versatility.

Alligator’s 1-2-3 punch of Geese, City Middle, and Mr November is fricking tough. Last three songs on the album though so that got missed by a lot of folks.

A lot of fans of Alligator were disappointed in Boxer because it was so restrained in comparison. Then after a few playthroughs it sunk in for me and others.

High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me were good but a bit up and down to me. Some truly great songs but some very forgettable songs; Sleep Well Beast and I Am Easy to Find continued this trend but with fewer highs than lows.

Also they have some truly excellent singles and B-sides not included on their proper releases.

Top 10

1. Slow Show
2. Geese of Beverly Road
3. Mr November
4. Mistaken for Strangers
5. About Today (extended)
6. Apartment Story
7. Conversation 16
8. Pink Rabbits
9. Baby We’ll Be Fine
10. Think You Can Wait

Glad to see Pink Rabbits in the top 10 lists here. Anyone have Exile Vilify on their list by chance?

My mind was blown when it was announced The National would be doing a song for Portal 2

Great song for sure.

I don’t think I could possibly do a top 10 for The National. Far too fluid.

Great song. There are a ton of great National tracks I didn’t list just because they have so many.

They have a lot of good stuff but I’m gonna say Lit Up. It was the first song I’ve heard from them and it’s just always stuck as on of my favorites.

That’s them finding their footing. Reorchestrate that in the current.

Thats the first song I liked by them and really made me notice them... Then Alligator came out and I thought it was phenomenal... They played the Red Star in Baton Rouge the fall that album came out..

I have kinda stopped listening to them, not because I dislike them.. they can just be kinda boring.. prob not the best word to explain what I mean, but the easiest (or laziest) way..
