I like the youtube version here better than the album version...mostly because of the end:

Regina spektor -- better

Cheap Trick's - I Want You to Want Me

The definitive version is the one off of Cheap Trick at Budokan.. Its the one everyone knows

The original version, off of In Color, lacks the balls and isn't as good..

Deep Purple was infinitely better on its Made in Japan live album than its early studio albums featuring the big hits. The energy level and the extended jams were off the chart.

Did the OP mean alternate studio versions not live versions? Because that would make this a much better question.

I like the Tumbleweed Connection Re-Issue version of Madman Across the Water better than the actual Madman album version.

Devin Townsend - Kingdom

Basically, this is Devy playing to a backing track from the album, but his vocals are insanely perfect.

Here's a truly live track that also beats the original:

Deadhead

His vocals that start around 6:30 are just not fair.

That is what I had in mind, but I didn't do a great job of specifying that.

As for alternate studio versions, dredg made the mistake of letting the demo for Catch Without Arms get out. They were very well fleshed out songs and people fell in love with them, then the more refined final album versions weren't as well-received as they could have been.

I have two examples:

REM
Finest Worksong (original)

I like this version better (added horns, bass is more defined):
Finest Worksong (Mutual Drum Horn Mix from Eponymous compilation album)

Going in the opposite direction:

Aerosmith
The Other Side (original)

I like this version better (raw, minimal background vocals):
The Other Side ("Honky Tonk" version)

Oh, this reminds me. I like Van Halen's On Fire from the 1976 demo better than the more refined album version, because that raw sound seems more appropriate to the song and I imagine this is what it was like to hear VH in the clubs before they made it big...

I much prefer this take of "Yes It Is" by the Beatles over the finished product.

Love the "Live At Budokan" version of "I Want You To Want Me". One of the watershed recordings (along with "My Sharona" by the Knack) which marked the transition from the vapid late 70s disco era to the rock and roll halcyon days of the early 80s.

By contrast, the studio recording of I Want You To Want Me off the In Color album is barely recognizable as the same song and by comparison seems suitable for a funeral.
