Although Sting alludes to other pieces of literature in regards to the lyrics, he has mentioned "The Executioner's Song", and Gary Gilmore as the main inspiration.

"Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin, they had a story about this old British soldier that they knew, but I suspect it was based on James E. Michener's book "Caravans" .
I love that song. The feeling of always climbing is impressive.
