y. Not a fan of her more recent overtly commercialized pop stuff, but I can see why it sells. Thought her earlier acoustic guitar-driven stuff demonstrated a lot of songwriting talent though.

She did write her own songs.

I don;t know how much of the lifting she does know on writing?

Serious Taylor Swift question
Help me understand why she is a superstar. I’m not debating her lyrics. I’m sure they are great. It’s the actual melodies, the music itself I have a problem with.
I have pulled up her top ten songs on YouTube and have yet to hear one even remotely decent interesting catchy tune. The actual melodies are completely lame, lackluster and uninteresting. Very amateur sounding and uninspired.
As for the songs, there are a lot of good ones - it's Max Martin, after all.
I think Enchanted is by far the best one. The pre-chorus and chorus melodies are banging and it actually has an interesting arrangement.

I remember a story about John Mayer talking to one of my producers friends in LA asking about her and if she is writing this stuff. She apparently 100% writes the vast majority of it, and it’s basically beefed up with professional arrangements and proper musicians. I have no doubt she is a pretty gifted pop artist, if you’re into that type of “women empowerment” type of pop. Which I’m not really, but I’m not hating on her.

They try this shite with Adele too. The guy from Semisonic is her big writing partner. And by that, I mean he comes up with all the melodies and most of the lyrics and then Adele writes one line.

My question to you is, who else?
I don't really disagree with you. This is a music vacuum now.

She's the female Ed Sheeran and that's not a compliment.
Obviously, a lot of y’all don’t like to dance, but guess what? Some people like music to dance to and Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, Shivers, Dancing With My Eyes Closed… all fun as hell to dance to. Taylor’s Cruel Summer has its danceable moments, as well. Some music is just for fun.

I don't understand why so many people get triggered by Tay Tay. She's not artificially elevated, people actually love her music, and she has a very long and sustained career. She hasn't overdosed or died in a maserati crash, she just keeps putting out hits and selling out shows. What more can you ask of a musician? Make an experimental album screeching like Yoko? I love Taylor Swift.

You’re listening wrong. Swift’s catalog is catchy as hell, especially the 1989 record. She’s one of the few artists working today who could’ve hung on the pop charts in the 1980s.

YES IT IS WHITE PEOPLE.
if you had a 15 year old daughter would you want her listening to Beyonce or Nikki Manaj. Hardly.

I know the name, but no clue about any of his songs
Outside of “Shape of You”, he has some really solid songs. “Perfect”, “Thinking Out Loud”, “Castle on the Hill”, etc. He’s really entertaining live, as well. He’s like a jonathan edwards from the 70’s or Sting in the 90’s. He’s a singer/songwriter making soft rock ballads with an acoustic guitar.
A lot of pop musicians, like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billy Eilish, Shawn Mendes, etc are making catchy simple songs that connect with an audience. Let’s not pretend most classic rock is more complicated. 90% of “dad” rock is just a riff on 12 bar blues or a 4 chord song (Pachelbel’s canon).
Some people make songs about f$&kin, some make songs about love, others make dongs about how cool they are, their addictions, the places that are special to them, trains, some about how sad they are, or how strong they are, or how they see our world needs to change. There’s plenty of room in music for silly little love somgs and breakup songs. Everyone falls in and out of love, so those kinds of songs will always have a place in music.

What I can’t understand is how a grown man enjoys that dreck. It’s embarrassing.

Her fan base is 12-30 year old girls. It’s not grown men. Grown men are standing outside waiting for their daughters to come out.

A big part of her fame that may be overlooked is that her music is safe for commutes with the kids in the backseat. That's rare, these days.
She's all too happy to fill this void in a world filled with WAP and things of that nature. Good for her.

I work in the school system were I live. Now granted, I'm only exposed to a few schools in one city, but young girls of ALL races and ethnicities love her where I'm at.
