And you're the guy who is too lazy to look for good music and has his spoon fed to him via radio/mtv or whatever... and assume if a band isn't on a major, then they are crap... Meanwhile, I'll keep listening to good rock music... regardless of labels, airplay or whether or not some muppet thinks rock is dead..
Maybe. Or I may be a guy who was on a indie, distribution from an indie like Red Distribution, and played CBGB's and every underground rock club across America in a 12 passenger van for over a decade.
You never really know

It would be impossible not to be. But it doesn't change the fact there is no one to put faith in rock to re energize the genre. Its almost as if no one wants to be a rock star.

Thanks for the reply but Alt Nation is totally unlistenable for me.....they do play a few songs that I like on XMU.
I think that the pinnacle of Rock was in the early '70's. There were a lot of bands given 'artistic freedom' at that point. 1972 was an especially good year for albums that came out.

I think it's more that no one wants to market a rock star. I think that some of the 90's rockers were embarrassed by their celebrity and what it did to their contemporaries like Kurt Cobain.

My point is when Metallica and Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam turn 60-70 and your current headliners are pushing 60, who the frick are you looking to next?
Black Sabbath just retired after a nearly 50 year career. Maiden, Metallica, and Priest have slowed down some but are still going. You have a lot of bands from the 90s that are in their early to mid 40s that could still go another 20 years. A7X and FFDP are both relatively young and enjoying huge success. You have bands like Volbeat, August Burns Red, Ghost, LOG, and Mastodon that are all one notch below festival headliner level. You're not gonna see a bunch of 25 year olds playing to 50,000+ people. It takes a good 10 years or so to really establish yourself at the top. The idea that your career is dying by the time you hit 30 is silly. No reason you can't keep rocking at a high level into your 60s.

This thread has meandered all over the place... but I guess I don't need anyone to do this, to have faith in the genre...
If thats what the masses need or want, I don't see it happening... I would agree that that era may well be over with...

Exactly, all this talk about cultural popularity or a face to be the leader of rock or who's ODing, I really don't care. As long as there is music I enjoy and find meaningful, then I am fine with the state of rock.

Johnny Ramone was a self identified racist neo nazi.

Kids are soft pussies today. Bottom line. Festival seating free for all's are a relic of our youth, Roger.

I'd assume you haven't heard ten songs combined by all those bands. Is that correct?
I've never even heard of any of those bands, which is exactly why rock is dead.
I should clarify what I mean: rock is dead as a meaningful cultural force in America. As a middle class white person status symbol, it's still very much alive. Which is to say, it's dead.

None of those bands are THAT obscure. The War on Drugs released the most critically acclaimed album of 2014. If you haven't heard of any of them, that's cool, people are busy and mostly like the music they grew up listening to. But I don't see why you should be laughing at those bands and/or making sweeping judgments about the state of rock music if you clearly aren't making any effort in keeping up.

Yep, but it was a good time to be a youth. Good mix of blue collar, college and punk rock.

As it should be. For me though, it lost its soul.

Right, rock fans don't like it when their favorite musicians reach a wider mainstream audience, that's selling out!
With that kind of mentality its not wonder the music industry decided to put more emphasis on rap and hip hop which are all about being flashy and successful. The very nature of the genre is who's the best and who has the most bling.

Works for me. 99% of things that appeal to the masses are total fricking garbage. I like the state of rock music and don't want it to get ruined like every other cultural phenomenon in this country.
