This list is far from all-encompassing, but here are some current bands that do rock and certainly aren't "gingers with loop pedals and ukuleles"

Titus Andronicus
Cloud Nothings
Japandroids
The Hold Steady
The War on Drugs
Car Seat Headrest
Parquet Courts
The Men
Cymbals Eat Guitars

I'd assume you haven't heard ten songs combined by all those bands. Is that correct?

Is there a radio station or Sirius channel that plays these bands?

I would think XMU and Alt Nation would.

I see that point. There are a good amount of new rock bands that I like but they just don't seem to have the mass appeal that bands of the past used to for whatever reason.

I think that barometer for judging good rock music has long been over.. the best rock music in the past 40 years or so has come from the underground...

Have you heard of the band, "random band x" they're amazing. What, they got picked up by a major? They are terrible now.

You're that guy.

How much of this has to do with age? I am 43? I have brought this up before. I am chronologically regressing in music discovery.

Things I have found after 2000... That are from the new millenum.

1. Jack White/White Stripes... They broke up and I can take them or leave them. But I can understand people thinking they/he is very good.

2. Mr. Brightside, The Killers. I have heard little from them since, so as mentioned from others I can't name another song they do/did so...?

3. Dead Sara. Randomly found that band through some youtube "suggested videos". But chick band, they can get poppy and hipster alt rock. The lead guitarist has a rack so that keeps some interested. The singer CAN wail though.

Thats all I got.

And you're the guy who is too lazy to look for good music and has his spoon fed to him via radio/mtv or whatever... and assume if a band isn't on a major, then they are crap...

Meanwhile, I'll keep listening to good rock music... regardless of labels, airplay or whether or not some muppet thinks rock is dead..

I want to like him. I really do. His heart is in the right place. I just don't think he's all that great. His voice certainly isn't.

Ive heard Little Steven talk them up on his show...

All those Nordic bands are so good at bringing 50s/60s era rock music forward and still sounding contemporary..

As I posted a few days ago, this band sounds exactly like they recorded at Decca Studios in 1964

Is that supposed to be some prerequisite to making good rock music?

Rock is rebellious. There just aren't many real struggles these days. Rock's around, but it doesn't have the same soul.

isn't hitting the masses in the face like it used to.

Why is that?

It's not on the radio, mtv, in popular culture memes, or in advertisements. No one hears it unless they're already looking for it.

See, I enjoyed pop punk in the early 2000s, so I was a fan of bands like Sum 41, Blink 182, and Yellowcard.

As far as post 2008 or so:

Jack White - big fan of his in all of his bands, especially the Raconteurs
Rise Against
Four Years Strong
Crash Kings
Cage the Elephant
Manchester Orchestra
The Black Keys
Arctic Monkeys
Gaslight Anthem
Streetlight Manifesto
Islander

Could never get into them and I love Brendan Benson's solo records... Or the Dead Weather..

Only could dig the WSs... the first three records were very good..

Maybe rock isn't dead, but rock as we know it could be. Sure, maybe the days of penthouse hotel suites, snorting coke off hookers' asses, seemingly unlimited lines of credit, and household recognition may be over...and likewise, maybe the days of record labels holding bands by the balls are over too. I'm sure many upcoming rock bands can still earn a decent living headlining theatres, and so what if some housewife in the suburbs never heard of them...it's not the end of the world, is it?
