Robert Earl Keen Announces Surprise Retirement

says that after September 2022 he’ll no longer tour or give public performances. The beloved Texas singer-songwriter announced his retirement on Friday with a heartfelt if surprising note on his website.
“I [have] been blessed with a lifetime of brilliant, talented, colorful, electric and magical folks throughout my life,” Keen wrote. “This chorus of joy, this parade of passion, this bullrush of creativity, this colony of kindness and generosity are foremost in my thoughts TODAY.”
Keen, 66, plans to continue playing numerous shows up through Sept. 4, when he will wrap things up with multiple performances at Floore’s Country Store in Helotes, Texas.
In his letter, Keen pointed out that his decision to retire had nothing to do with health issues: “I’m a strong believer in clarity and truth. As much as I love what I do, it’s more important that I do it well or not at all. I’m not sick or experiencing any existential crisis. I feel that making a decision and quitting the road while I still love it, is the way I want to leave it. I’ve witnessed first hand the alternative and promised myself I would go out feeling all the love for music and performing the same way I entered — with passion and enthusiasm.” LINK

Apparently the road doesn’t go on forever.

Give Him 2 or 3 years and he'll be back. The last 2 years have been frustrating for musicians and he is over it for now

Me I'm just the same lost in a crowd
Lookin' for the rain in a thunder cloud

I just saw him play one of his Christmas shows. Honestly he was the most upbeat and funny as I’ve ever seen him. This is surprising but good for him if just wants to chillax. Glad I went to the concert.

The party does, indeed, end

This old porch is just a long time waiting and forgetting
And remembering the coming back, not crying 'bout the leaving
And remembering the falling down
And the laughter and the curse of luck
From all them sons-of-bitches, who said we'd never get back up
And remembering the coming back, not crying 'bout the leaving
And remembering the falling down
And the laughter and the curse of luck
From all them sons-of-bitches, who said we'd never get back up

REK only used his guns when kindness failed, and I respect that.

I looked across the room
And saw you standin' on the stair
And when I caught your eye
I saw you break into a grin
It feels so good feelin' good again
One of my favorite songs of his. I’ve listened to him for the last 25 years. I now regret I never got to see him live. He will be rocking at the deer camp for the next few days and for years to come.

The Brazos still runs muddy, like she's run all along
There aint never been no cane to grind, the cotton's all but gone

I saw him in the mid 90s at Billy Bob's (FTW??)... I was so out of my element with that venue/crowd, but I had a fun time and he put on a great show!

When I was a young man
The only things
that got me goin' were
Gettin' high and chasin' love
Lyin' down beside my girl
On the banks of the river
With nothin' but some mustang wine
And all the stars above
It's a twistin' turnin' windin' road
I get lost and broken down
I'm a stumbler and it won't be long
'Till stumble back around
The only things
that got me goin' were
Gettin' high and chasin' love
Lyin' down beside my girl
On the banks of the river
With nothin' but some mustang wine
And all the stars above
It's a twistin' turnin' windin' road
I get lost and broken down
I'm a stumbler and it won't be long
'Till stumble back around

First time seeing him was around 1994. I've seen him 5 or 6 times since then. Saw him a little over a month ago, and I'm glad I was able to. I would have hated to miss that show, then hear this.

Saw him a dozen or so times, including at HOB in Nola a few months ago...really glad I got that one last show.
First show I caught was at the Varsity with Kasey Chambers opening...excellent performances.
He was hitting on all cylinders in the mid-late 90s/early 2000s
ACL 1995
ACL 1997 (with some upstart named Jack Ingram following)

We went to Dallas to visit family in June and saw him at a 4k venue that was about 2/3 full. Literally 2 days later, he announced more dates and we saw him at HOB in Nola 2 days before Ida. It was a great show musically. My wife said he certainly isn't there to be a showman, but rather to play great music.
I'm glad he played my favorite, "Dreadful, Selfish Crime" at both shows... One thing I have found there are just two ways to go, it all comes down to living fast or dying slow

I've probably seen REK a dozen times, but not in the last 5 years or so. Didn't he do this before - perhaps not so definitively - but taking a step back/indefinite hiatus, etc.?
