I can't take any artist seriously that doesn't write (most) of their own music and play their own instruments.

If you are just a front that sings into a microphone while all the songs are written and instruments played for you, I will not listen to you.

Amen

And my immediate pick is Taylor Swift. Usually I give credit to anybody that writes at least some of their own music but she's awful at it. I actually love a good pop song so it's not that, it's that every one of her songs is a bland flat line with no dynamics, her voice is boring, her looks are boring, her stage presence is boring, her personality is boring. People raising this girl up as an all time musical artist and musical act is laughably surreal. The kids like to say something or someone is "mid", Taylor Swift is the most mid human being I've ever witnessed. In everything

Yes, agreed.

Does anyone take this dude seriously?

He comes off as a caricature of a musical artist.

He’s dead now, but the biggest “most commercial success least amount of actual talent” is Jimmy Buffet. This guy was a karaoke singer at best.

Buffet created his own genre - "island escapism" with a major following like the Grateful Dead had their own following.
His "Come Monday" is actual a country classic and more country that today's country music.

I could never take DEVO seriously. or

Grateful Dead

Christopher Cross

I understand about Christopher Cross, but the man could play guitar.

How dare you.

One I haven't seen mentioned is Jack White. You know he's a super cereal artist, just look at the guitar he made out of an old dog's stick and some used dental floss.

I figured as much.

Lady Gaga is another one I don't get the hype over.

Totally outside my listening genres, but I get it if that's your thing. She's very talented.

I understand not liking him. Music is subjective. But taking him seriously? The guy is a brilliant musician and has a great voice.

There are plenty of artists I don't take seriously, but they generally are not good musicians or songwriters, or are posers. I respect talent.

The few songs by jam bands that I do like tend to be the same ones that hardcore fans of those bands describe as their weakest tracks

So your favorite Phish song is "Brian and Robert"?
