Pop punk was a big fad in the 90’s and early 2000’s when the simple stripped down chord progressions and angsty lyrics and style of the late 80’s skate punk was combined with more pop-friendly sounding lyrics. This created a sound that was very top 40 radio friendly at the time and was a sort of breath of fresh air for fans of rock who wanted a break from depressing grunge music, and provided a clear alternative to the rap metal and nu metal which was starting to gain prominence at the time.
So, basically, Green Day’s brand of skate punk killed off all the other punk bands and genres and became commercially successful. So, once Blink 182 and the Offspring too hit it biggish, studios, record labels, and mtv realized there was something to this and created a massive wave of these kinds of bands that flooded the market.
The music was hard enough to appeal to teenage boys, but the lyrics were sweet and romantic enough to appeal to teenage girls. The music was fun enough for frat parties and tailgates to boot so it kinda filled the niche today filled by bro country.
At the time, the label “pop punk” was seen as a derogatory term, and the bands involved in the scene like Good Charlotte, Bowling for Soup, Sum 41, and Yellowcard all saw themselves as punk bands. Eventually, though, the label kinda stuck because it’s pretty accurate.
Running concurrently to pop punk was emo music that was less accessible to the mainstream. However, the two genres began to cross over in the mid 2000’s giving rise to bands like the Used, My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy, Hawthorne Heights, Rise Against, and Panic at the Disco who would basically completely take over the pop rock scene in 2005 as rock music in general was slowly purged from top 40 radio.
By 2009, not only was rock now almost completely removed from fm pop radio, but the emo/pop punk bands had been faded out with the new fad: indie folk bands like Lumineers, Revivalists, and Mumford & Sons.
Pop punk had a short lived mini resurgence around 2012-2014 with bands like Tigers Jaw with more thrashy guitars doing the more shouty vocals like in my second set of bands, but the genre is pretty much dead.
Oddly enough, a lot of emo and pop punk style guitars and vocals are entering trap, rap, and hip hop music these days.

Fenix Tx - All My Fault
Now that is a name I have not heard in a long time...Damn, I forgot I had this song downloaded on Napster back in probably 2001. I'm pretty sure I have it burned on some mix CD from back then too.
Also, can't forget Fenix TX - Rooster Song
Was a great joke song in high school.

Pardon me, gentlemen...pop punk connoisseur coming through:
The Ramones - Do You Wanna Dance?
The Descendents - Silly Girl
Teenage Bottlerocket - Skate or Die
Not sure if I can get on board with this new stuff and all the electronic elements, but I'll always love me some pop punk. Also Machine Gun Kelly's pop punk album might be the worst thing I've ever heard that passes itself off as serious.
