Pantera kept metal alive in the 90's when these other bands went soft and grungy. Pantera was better and tighter than any of these other bands.

Pantera's thick groove style is sick, but when did a Bruce-led Maiden ever go soft? The Wicker Man was a triumphant return track for Dickinson.

Pantera was great when they were great and I do mean tops. But they have a ton of material that is not so great also even on their best albums.
That doesn't mean they don't belong among the greats but to rank them higher than some of those is suspect for my tastes.

1. Metallica
2A Pantera
2B Megadeth
Not a big fan of the others. I am however on a big Pantera kick recently. Watched the couple hour home video DVD a few weeks ago with my buddy.

Yeah, no.
Rust in Peace era Megadeth and Reign in Blood era Slayer are not behind "new Metallica".

I get not liking Dave Mustane's voice for any critic out there but I challenge anyone to find a better run than Rust In Peace, Countdown and Youthansia. In some ways it may top Metallica's golden age.

rank these runs:
Metallica - kill em all, ride the lightening, master of puppets
Pantera - cowboys from hell, Vulgar display of power, far beyond driven
megadeth - rust in peace, countdown, youthansia
I gotta go:
1. pantera
2. metallica
3. megadeth

My tastes have changed as I get older and I have listened to those albums so many times at this point that it is mostly down to which ones I want to keep listening to. So that being said:
1.Megadeth
2.Metallica (could be more of 1B)
3.Pantera
Again, there are elements of Pantera in those 3 albums that are better than Megadeth and Metallica combined. But as a whole that is how I rank them. There is a lot of stuff on Far beyond driven and Cowboys from Hell that is unappealing to me. And as much as I like Kill em All, it is not as good to me as Lightening and Puppets. Those 3 Megadeth albums barely have one bad song a piece on them.

And as of now, I am a bigger fan of Ghost than I ever thought I would be. It is starting to be the only thing I listen to lately.

Good analysis, I'm on a pantera kick right now. I might rank these differently next month

I rank them accordingly:
Metallica (pre black album)
Iron Maiden
Pantera
Slayer
Anthrax
Megadeth
Metallica (post black album)

I much prefer Megadeth's run of
Killing Is My Business
Peace Sells
So Far, So Good
Could just be my age.
