I have gone back and listened to this era recently and it is real hit and miss for me. I like some things from each album (although far less from So Far, So Good, which I think is their worst album). I don't think they fully hit their stride until Rust in Peace when they had my favorite lineup also. But again, just my opinion.

Absolutely personal taste with these things. Also, I think point of entry is a huge factor.

That's the thing about them. They take evil shite and make it seem beautiful or epic. Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, He Is, and Year Zero are perfect examples.

Phil at his height was the best frontman of the five bands listed, but that’s the only way Pantera comes out on top.

I am not fond of the satanic angle either, but the way I look at it is it is a bit of a joke because he is really into the theatrical side of things and he seems to have a really good sense of humor about everything surrounding the mystique of what he is doing so it may be a big troll job. Either way, the music is fantastic and is heads and tails above a lot of stuff that is out today so it won't prevent me from enjoying it.

What a sick combination Friedman and Mustaine were together. Both are/were A list lead guitarists and most bands barely had one guy of their caliber, much less two.
