Name a song that was popular, but wouldn't have been if people paid attention to lyrics

Every now and then I hear once popular songs on the radio that I liked the tune to years ago and suddenly realize what the lyrics are about and question why it was a hit. There are lots of examples. One that comes to mind is Hot Child in the City by Nick Gilder. Though some may argue that it was to point attention to the problem of child prostitution, the lyrics seem a bit too creepy to be a song about a cause.
Danger in the shape of somethin' wild
Stranger dressed in black, she's a hungry child
No one knows who she is or what her name is
I don't know where she came from or what her game is
Hot child in the city
Hot child in the city
Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty
Hot child in the city
So young to be loose and on her own
Young boys, they all want to take her home
She goes downtown, the boys all stop and stare
When she goes downtown, she walks like she just don't care, care
Hot child in the city
Hot child in the city
Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty
Hot child in the city
Come on down to my place, baby
We'll talk about love
Come on down to my place, woman
We'll make love!
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
She's kinda dangerous
(Hot child in the city)
Young child
(Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty)
Young child, runnin' wild
(Hot child in the city)
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
Oh!
Danger in the shape of somethin' wild
Stranger dressed in black, she's a hungry child
No one knows who she is or what her name is

Hot child in the city

Just so this post doesn't get too creepy, I don't think people realize that the song American Woman by The Guess Who is an anti-American song. The Guess Who were Canadian and it is was written during the Vietnam War, but is basically telling Americans that Canadians don't need them and to leave them alone.

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in a market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright
Hear him whip the women just around midnight
Brown sugar
How come you taste so good?
Brown sugar
Just like a young girl should
Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' where it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard him just around midnight
Brown sugar
How come you taste so good, now?
Brown sugar
Just like a young girl should
Ah, get along, brown sugar
How come you taste so good
Ah, got me feelin' now, brown sugar
Just like a black girl should
I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen
I'm no schoolboy but I know what I like
You shoulda heard me just around midnight
Brown sugar
How come you taste so good
Ah, brown sugar
Just like a young girl should
Brown sugar
Get down, get down
How come you taste so good
Ah, brown sugar
Get down, get down
Just like a young girl should
Ah, brown sugar
Get down, get down
How come you taste so good
Ah, brown sugar
Get down, get down
Moving around, moving around
Ah, brown sugar
Get down, get down

I don't think it qualifies as popular
But I watched my wife jam to Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon a ton over the course of a couple of years before I made her hone in on the lyrics.

I beg your pardon. That's an incredibly written song.
Rock and Roll ain't politically correct.

Do you think those lyrics would fly in today's world?

Nope
All the more reason they're great.

I know Fairtytale of New York has stopped being played on the radio (not everywhere) in recent years because of the one lyric (f****t)... but that was clear as day the whole time, so maybe this doesn't fit..

Ah you're right.
My apologies

Winger - She’s Only Seventeen
Actually, they didn’t GAF, as they put the creepy part in the actual title of the song.

Then why was the lyric: " hear him whip the women just around midnight "
changed to:
"you should have heard him just around midnight".

You come on like a dream, peaches and cream
Lips like strawberry wine
You're sixteen, you're beautiful and you're mine
You're all ribbons and curls, ooh, what a girl
Eyes that sparkle and shine
You're sixteen, you're beautiful and you're mine
You're my baby, you're my pet
We fell in love on the night we met
You touched my hand, my heart went pop
Ooh, when we kissed I could not stop
You walked out of my dreams and into my arms
Now you're my angel divine
You're sixteen, you're beautiful and you're mine
You're my baby, you're my pet
We fell in love on the night we met
You touched my hand, my heart went pop
Ooh, when we kissed I could not stop
Lips like strawberry wine
