Gary Moore.
Blues, rock, metal, jazz...he could go toe to toe with anyone. His playing was just so melodic, even when shredding. Unreal accuracy, never a wrong note.

This is always so subjective but if we're using "greatest" then it's gotta include certain criteria to achieve that.
It may not be your favorite or even someone you like, but I'd probably say it needs to include some mix of:
- great technical skill
- influential to the point of changing how many people play the instrument
- great song writer
- original and somewhat unorthodox (which overlaps a bit with point 2)
There's just too many awesome guitarists out there, but only a few that hit those marks.
Hendrix, Gilmour and EVH stand out but I'm bias to them.

Sonny Landreth deserves a mention.

Obviously SRV will be the choice for a lot of folks, rightfully so.
But, the greatest player of any string instrument of all time is Roy Clark. It really isn't debatable.
Most of you people will never heard of this next dude. But shredders are well aware of who he is. He was a friend of mine and he died, he died.
RIP Shawn Lane.
I know most of y'all will gloss over or ignore, but this guy was next level. Shawn Lane was Bucketheads idol.
3rd place goes to Monte Montgomery. I sure wish I could play like this.

lol.
Any string instrument? So now you’re included all the famous violinists and cello players, on top of all the guitar, banjo and mandolin players.
Not debatable? Of course it’s fricking debatable.

nope. it's been proven by several different studies at MIT, Stanford, and Centenary.
Roy Clark was a savant. He really was that good.

I agree there is no such thing as the greatest ever. Even if you tried to come up with a legitimate list then it would probably need to be broken down by genre and sub genre.
Some of my favs have already been listed in the comments before mine. Here is a few more that haven’t been mentioned so far in no particular order.
1. Malmsteen
2. Wyld
3. Dime
4. All the guys from Maiden
5. KK & Glenn
6. Mustaine
7. Het & Hammet
8. Criss Olivia
9. Iommi
10. Kenny Hickey
That’s just a few of my favs. Could keep adding to this list all night tbh.
