Agreed. I just included him in my post from a few minutes ago. Humble and quiet personality and plays the type of music that most people don't listen to.

You can have 100 replies with 100 different guitarists and all will have their merits.

HOWEVER

If you want the MJ or Brady of guitar in terms of influence, cultural impact, innovation, etc....then it is unquestionably Eddie Van Halen

Randy Rhoads did more in two albums than most have ever done.

Probably will get a lot of down votes but why isn't Neil Schon from Journey ever mentioned?

No Chet Atkins?

Absolutely in the conversation. He’s the main “country guy” that I was lazily referring to

Neil Schon is a great guitarist. But Journey probably gets a lot of disrespect due to their musical style. He also wasn't very cutting edge, which is fine. Most guitarists aren't.

In terms of longevity, career span and commercial success, few are better.

If you are talking Schon, then you'll probably want to include Carlos Santana as well.

I'm not including either, I was just responding to another poster. I don't think either is in the "best" discussion, but they are both excellent - which highlights how stupid the entire thing is.

I'll add Leo Kottke, never seen anyone like him (Chimes - around 1990 I think).

And Garcia and Anastasio.

I do like your composers/creators list.

I won’t say Gilmour is the “best”. I think that is hard to determine but he is by far my favorite.

His tuning and sound is the shite

Lots of good answers to a very subjective question. James Taylor is a favorite of mine.

There can't be a single answer. I'll go with my favorite...Alex Lifeson.

He is overlooked, because the other members are considered the best at their instruments.

Admitting that Eddie van Halen is a great guitarist.
He just doesn't move me. I don't feel anything.

Thats why I think these discussions are better if you separate them into "Best guitarist in terms of ability" and "Best in terms of the actual music".

I think there are certainly better "players" than Clapton, but its hard to find many better in a music context.

EVH to me at times feels a bit like a guitarist version of Chris Stapleton. Insane talent, but sometimes the songs feel more about showcasing talent than they do creating an actual good song.

Van Halen has created some of the best rock songs of all time.

Sirius XM did their top 100 classic rock songs of all time last year and Van Halen had more songs on the list than any other artist.

The songs are generally guitar heavy, but that was the style at the time. Most rock bands were guitar heavy with flashy solos.

Absolutely. And some of them aren't so great and are mainly about EVH shredding. Which is fine.

Welcome to every musical group ever.

Unless there is someone that I am not aware of making only great songs.
