Yeah, I haven't lived in BR in over 15 years... that's probably the reason for my lack of excitement... the conversation I had was about two months ago and this thread reminded me. I was intentionally vague, because I didn't know how much was out in public...

I am happy if it's successful and the people of BR who like live music... I don't think he would be doing it, if this other person wasn't involved though...

I think it’ll be very successful and will be the go to spot for original music in town.

Yeah, I'll look forward to checking it out when I come back in town...

The Varsity was the best venue in town with the best stage, lights, sound system, acoustics, and sound man in town.

They have the best room (being an old movie theater certainly helps), but their sound and lighting systems are pretty outdated. Especially lighting - they are still using old school incandescent par cans with gels. I would argue that the lighting at The Basin is actually much better. All Martin (if I’m not mistaken) moving-head LEDs. B&T’s updated their lighting a few years back as well but it’s set up more for the dance floor than the band.

So the new venue will be “Chelsea’s live” and it will hopefully be open by October. 600 person bar venue. The spanish moon/mid city ballroom booking guy will be doing the booking. Dave, who started Chelsea’s years ago and owns mid city beer garden and radio bar will be spearheading it. Being told this new venue will be THE spot for mid level touring bands. This will fill the hole of the varsity being gone.

do college students go to concerts?

LOL. WTF? I saw Clutch at the Varsity two years ago just one month before my 53rd birthday. What do college students have to do with concerts at the Varsity by great mid-level touring bands?

I was at that show. I felt like the youngest dude there by at least 10 years

Hot DAMN!!!

This is great news for my once every ten-year Baton Rouge concert experience. I may start trying to plan trips back home around them though since both kids are out of the house now.

I remember my friend turning to me and being like, “imagine making it in rock music, becoming a famous touring band, but the only people who come see you are bearded dads…”

Most college kids are more into edm,

Uhh first off the Varsity did PLENTY of EDM shows And I think you got it confused... Most people who start out with EDM slowly shift over to jam bands. Not heavy rock but rock nonetheless.

This. Every single person at the Ghost show at the Orpheum looked EXACTLY the same:
- shaved head
- hop gut
- long beard
- black concert T or plaid shirt
- crappy Ascension Parish tattoos

Whoever does the basin music hall booking is working really hard on finding the lamest bands I’ve ever seen.

It’s a great venue. But yeah the booking is seriously underwhelming.
