Has to be one of these:

Phil Collins (yes, Phil Collins) - In the air tonight.

Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

Pink Floyd - Goodbye Blue Sky

Alice in Chains - Nutshell

(At work - cannot get youtube links)

Another New World by Josh Ritter

Cover of it by Punch Brothers. I've seen them do this live. They had people in the audience crying by the time they finished.

Careful With that Axe, Eugene, although I prefer the Ummagumma version:

I'm not sure if this qualifies as ominous or if it's just really depressing.

Alice in Chains - Nutshell

AIC has some powerful ominous songs. I'd go with a different song though:

Alice in Chains - Would

....haunting song about regret, despair, depression, and more specifically drug addiction. The lyrics are heartbreaking and depressing.

"into the flood again, same old trip it was back then..so I made a big mistake, try to see it once my way.......am I wrong...have I run too far to get home?...."

Maybe not Ominous, but haunting for sure.
