yes but not angrily
I don't know about punk shows, but for metal its just a way to let out some aggression. Its an extension of the violent, aggressive music really.

They always have some shitty mosh pit happen at the shows my friends play. I get pissed because I have to be careful not to spill my beer.

Now that I'm an adult, I would never go for that type of thing. I'm a pretty relaxed guy, and I mostly like my entertainment to be relaxing. However, it worked for me when I was a 15 year old going to small time punk concerts. It was a good way to get out some of that teenage angst. Just a phase to go through, and I sure as hell am glad that I got through it.

Is there moshing at any shows these days? What changed? Is music less aggressive/powerful these days?
I honestly don't know, I haven't listened to heavy music in like 10 years.
Korn at Woodstock

People just run around and bang into one another. Not a big leap from there to a mosh pit with actual violence.
I was out drinking a while back and a friend of mine walked in with his arm in a sling. I asked what happened and he said mosh pit. I'm like dude, you're 40 years old why the frick are you trying to hang in a mosh pit with a bunch of teenagers? So apparently they still exist.

I just went to my high school football coach's retirement party. I asked him what was going to keep him busy now that he wasn't working...he responded with enjoying the mosh pit at Flogging Molly shows. Then he went on to relive all of the mosh pits he has been in over the past 10 years.
All I could do was shake my head.

I got kicked directly in the face at a Flogging Molly show. Man, they still kick arse.

Best pogo I ever saw break out - The Futureheads show in Seattle in 2005

I'll make sure to start a mosh pit during a banjo climax at the Mumford concert next month.

Slayer sent a cameraman into the pit for their Live Intrusion home video. I guess he was wearing a helmet cam or something like that. LINK
This video, Exodus - Toxic Waltz, really started moshing at metal shows and separated it from slam dancing or whatever at punk shows. The lyrics are basically instructions on how to mosh.
