There’s a lot of good music being made, but you probably won’t hear it on terrestrial radio. “Alt” radio is a joke. It’s just wypipo rapping to backing tracks with banjos.

I've tried.

You hear the occasional "band" with a decent sounding tune. You pick up the album and there's 10 to 12 more songs that sound exactly the same. By the next album, the "band" has transitioned to aping Caribbean pop and after that they've started 15 other "projects" that are just as unremarkable. If you make the mistake of seeing them live, you'll generally see a sad affair of trying to make pro-tools translate to the stage somehow.

There's decent stuff, but on a relative scale of music in the last half century or so, that's the best you can say for 99% of it.

I'm just glad I grew up when I did.

You state this so matter-of-factly that at first glance it sounds wrong, but sadly, it's true.

How'd we go from acts like Hall and Oates, Madonna, and John Mellencamp dominating popular radio to garbage like Cardi B and a half-dozen rappers with "Baby" in their names?!

I don't know any 10-25 year olds personally who dig it. That group is into retro. The brighter ones

I've been feeling this way since i was in my 20s in the late 90s.

To be fair to contemporary music, I hardly ever hear it. But when I do, it is always crap.

I realize that every generation complains about the next generations music, but I think all boomers/gen xers/millennials can agree that pop music today really is the worst. I don’t get it. It’s all this sort of weird mix of rap, r&b, shitty pop beats and ridiculously dumb mumbled lyrics....and it all basically sounds the same...Or you have the people that just formed a cover band, and are doing their best impersonation of people from the past.

Obviously there are still good bands/artists making interesting music, there always has been, but what’s popular music now is the worst.

To not be a pansy I have to like rock's original, certified Karens or the basic bitch, low-rent version of Bruce. Yeah, I'll pass.

There's just so much music being made and made easily available today. So much more than was being released half a century ago. I'm not saying you can easily replace your favorite classic band, but if you cannot find good music, you're not using the internet well.

I like the old stuff too but lots of great music being made today. But you wont hear it unless you make an effort. Read the What are You Listening to thread and listen to what people post. You won't like most of it but you will eventually find some stuff that you like.

I’m sure I’ll get downvoted but the wife and I watched Billie Eilish’s documentary the other night on a whim so I gave her album a listen and, goddam, does that chick and her brother know how to write a song.

Not everyone’s taste, I’m sure, but she has an Amy Winehouse/Lana del Rey vibe

I’m not saying Mellencamp’s one of the greats; I was just throwing out the first names that came to mind.

Felt the same way about Metallica... so maybe it's just a symptom of watching the next generation turn into soft, mama boy, pansy's.

Personally, music seemed to really go off a cliff for me around 2010. I still regularly found good stuff in the age of Napster, et al, but not anymore. The effort necessary to find that one needle in a haystack just isn’t worth it anymore.
